Keeps calling you back for another go...
This is the first real 'roguelite' I've played on my Quest 3 which for a short time, took me a bit of getting used to. Basically, if you die in the game, it's a 'perma-death'. You start right from the beginning but any unlockable achievements you gained from previous game run-throughs such as new types of arrows, extra health, or tougher classes of enemies will also apply. Hence the name of the game, I guess. You have to kick the bucket at some point to progress.
After pumping quite a few hours into the game, I finally managed to beat the last boss which was tough. The game is effectively on an endless loop so you keep racking up points until you croak. There is also a league table so you can see how you compare against other players across the globe. However, the game at the moment displays Summer 2024 season, so I don't know if the devs have just abandoned the game now?
The bow mechanics do feel good and satisfying in this game. It's always great when you manage to nail a headshot from quite some distance away. There are 3 modes of movement; teleportation arrows for long distance jumps, teleportation shards for quick dodging, and slow walking with the thumb stick. You can also bring up a shield for attacks and use it as a weak melee weapon to knock close enemies back.
This does have Quest 3 graphics upgrades. Parts of the game do look really good. The resolution is decent. But some textures on occasions look low quality.
Overall, this is a solid game. I rarely award 5 stars to any title. It's easy to pick up and play once you have the hang of the basic mechanics but it's the type that is also difficult to master. There's no real story or deep concept to the game but I found myself employing various strategies. If you go in guns or bows blazing, you can find yourself overrun very quickly by 20+ enemies at once. I can understand why some folks won't take to this game but I found it quite addictive once I got used to the roguelite gameplay.
