The Mario 64 of VR
I followed this game closely during development and I know Paul Bettner (Playful CEO) aimed to make a classic 3D platformer that would become the Mario of VR and at least for me, they've done it. This was the first game I played when Rift CV1 launched and playing it again here flooded me with nostalgia and pleasant feelings from a time before the darkness came for us all.
When a genuinely new technology comes to gaming the earliest games are filled with moments that really take advantage of what couldn't have been done anywhere else and Lucky's Tale has plenty of that. Peeking behind things to see hidden coins, aiming bomb throws just by looking, reaching down amd interacting with Lucky are all VR specific treats that show the developers were just as excited and awed by what was capable as we once were.
VR researcher Michael Abrash is famous for saying "these are the good ol' days" back when it was all mew and development was more like the wild west. He was right and we knew it and at least for me, Lucky is the mascot of those good ol' days. I really hope Playful comes back to VR someday, but if they don't ay least we will have Lucky.
