I almost gave up on PCVR
When I finally got a PC that could handle PCVR, I was excited to dive in — but honestly, Air Link and even Link were a huge letdown.
I tested both extensively. Air Link barely pushed 40 FPS on low settings, and Link wasn't much better — maybe 50 FPS max. This was using a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) cable, so performance like that was just inexcusable.
I was seriously about to give up on PCVR entirely… until I finally did what all my friends had been suggesting from the start — I tried Virtual Desktop.
Oh. My. God.
Night and day difference. It worked flawlessly out of the box. I immediately jumped from unplayable stutters to 70–90 FPS depending on the game, and I could finally raise my settings to medium or high. I don’t have a monster rig, but it’s decent — and VD made it feel like I suddenly upgraded everything.
Since then, I’ve been able to fine-tune things even more using both Reddit suggestions and my own trial and error. Now, I get smooth 70+ FPS on high in most games. Meanwhile, Air Link and Link offer next to no meaningful settings to improve performance or stability — it’s baffling.
I know some people hesitate to try VD because it's $20 (was, more now i guess) — but after what I went through? I’d honestly pay double that in hindsight. It’s not just about the performance boost — it’s also way more convenient, flexible, and just works.
EDIT 5/21/25: Fast forward to today, over two years later, and the app has only gotten better. I still see random complaints or people calling it “expensive software,” and I honestly don’t get it. $25 for something this stable, this powerful, and this consistently maintained? That’s a steal. People dropping $80 on a Link Cable without blinking suddenly think $20 for software that actually solves problems is too much? Wild.
If you're on the fence, especially after struggling with Air Link like I did — just try it. With a proper wireless setup, Virtual Desktop is the only thing that “just works.”
