A Beautiful but Sometimes Confusing Game
Red Matter 2 improved on physically EVERYTHING from the original. The story was easier to understand, the gameplay was less repetitive and the puzzles were much less frustrating. However, I will say that some of the puzzles were definitely annoying and instead of making me feel proud of solving them, I just felt a sense of “finally, I can move on.”
Example: in the O2 refill room, once you kill the robots and make your way down, you find a battery in the back of a radio by looking on the back. Smart. But when I power the elevator, I need another battery to power the door. So I try to open the electric heater thinking it was the same (it was not). Turns out you have to use the grabbers to pull the battery off the elevator and back towards . Took me 30 minutes to figure out as I play standing and I grab everything manually to add to the fun. I wouldn’t have figured this out had I not randomly found it while walking through for the fifth time.
There were a few other puzzles like this, but other than that I had tons of fun beating it. I hope that if they continue the series (whether under another character or maybe as a prequel), they try to make less puzzles depending on mechanics that are entirely optional or unused to that point, especially considering I was 2/3 done with the game then. Otherwise, I loved the game and hope to see more.
