Smashing good fun!
I still believe what I said in my original review, it’s really a great experience, however, having played a while I am now playing only on super speed and chasing leaderboard positions across the different settings. The game becomes a different experience then, and not for the better.
It’s obviously way tougher and therefore easier to make mistakes, miss time or miss completely - however, there appears to be some tracking issue which may be software or hardware related, who knows?
Know this and accept it and you’ll be in for an adrenaline filled thrash fest. The issues are frustrating, but that aside it’s the best game on the quest.
On the upside, the discord community are great, helpful and always on hand. That included the developer who is attentive and accessible (and friendly too, which is always a bonus).
Hand down the best £££ I have spent.
******* oooooo *******
Original review at 5*
Disclaimer! I don’t like rhythm games (or didn’t think i did). Generally, I’m not a fan of playing the guitar or the accompanying music.
So then, what about smash drums.
It was on sale and I thought “why not give it a go and keep an open mind.” I don’t have any rhythm games, it’s a decent price. What could possibly go wrong?
Short answer is I can. It broke me.
What’s good…
Lots and lots and lots and lots of tracks, across multiple genres. Rock, heavy rock, indie, pop. It has a really good selection of music.
Tonnes and I mean tonnes of replay-ability, aside the fact this is a hellishly addictive game anyway. 4 difficulty levels, with 3 settings for each (forcing you to regulate your hit strength) and then if that’s not enough you can play on super speed. Taking the difficulty to 11. And if you still want more you can have the game throw random objects at you.
Hit tracking seems on the nose as well, there is the occasional “how did i miss that” moment, but then again, I’m flailing around on extreme and really have no idea what I’m aiming at anymore.
Still not enough? Multiplayer, customisable
Drum kits and oh, yeah, you can play in forward mode (sitting or standing) or 360 mode and the drums move about you.
What’s less good
There really aren’t any. I’d say the lack of known bands, but the music is great and has led me to discover some great artists I’d never heard of.
Oh and you get fit and lose weight, which nobody wants when playing a game, right?
Seriously, If you still aren’t convinced you must be dead inside.
Somehow, some way, a game in a genre I don’t like is my absolute number 1 game.
Now I need a lie down!
