SWARM2 is Not a Sequel, It’s a Downgrade
First I wanna say I never leave reviews on anything!!!! Iv left a 5/5 review on the original SWARM because it’s the best game on VR but SWARM 2 is a big disappointment!! As someone who loved the original SWARM, I was excited for this. After playing for hours, I can confidently say this game feels like a massive step backward in every way.
The movement mechanics are completely changed. In the first game, you had to physically pull down to swing yourself, which made it feel intense and skill-based. Now you move using the left thumbstick, which makes the game playable sitting down. That completely defeats the purpose. SWARM was described as “Spider-Man with guns” for a reason. This is not Spider-Man. This is something much slower and much less exciting. As well as it just does not feel as smooth as the original game in terms of movement. Sure I like you can grapple on more things such as buildings , and you don’t die if you touch the ground in this game but those are things that made the first one exciting!!! Why ruin something that was perfect!!!!! Smh
As well as the progression system is watered down in this SWARM 2……. In SWARM 1, you had five full zones, each with six unique levels and a different exciting difficult boss at the end. In SWARM 2, I hit a boss on level four and it was the same one over and over again. No zone system, no variety, just repetition.
The health system is frustrating. In the original game, you started every round with full health, which gave each run a fair shot. In this one, your health carries over from round to round, and when you die, you don’t restart the current round, you start from the very beginning. This makes it feel less like a skill challenge and more like a punishment loop. It completely kills motivation to push forward.
Weapon variety is also disappointing. I’ve only come across two alternate weapons, a lightning gun and a grenade launcher which were in the original game . That’s it. No real incentive to explore or look forward to power-ups. In the original game they would just spawn and higher zones got you cooler weapons…
The few mildly interesting mechanic is the perk system, which lets you make upgrades and choose modifiers. BUT THEY ONLY LAST FOR THAT SINGLE RUN , once you die , they are gone . That’s the one thing that adds some freshness, but it’s not enough to carry the rest of the game. As well as they finally added a store for the shards that you collect to increase your health or shield, however again. This is not enough to carry the rest of the game……
Overall, this does not feel like a sequel. It feels like a stripped down version of what made the original great. The pacing is worse. The content is thinner. The challenge feels unfair instead of fun. INSTEAD OF LOOKING FORWARD TO HITTING THE RETRY BUTTON LIKE IN THE FIRST GAME, YOU DREADD IT IN THIS GAME! It’s like the game was redesigned to be more casual and accessible at the cost of everything that made it special.
Unless they completely overhaul the progression, boss variety, and restore the fast-paced skill-based gameplay, I cannot recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the original. SWARM 1 is still the better game in every way.
