Best Badminton VR Game So Far
Best Badminton VR Game So Far, but Some Areas Need Improvement
I’ve been playing badminton since I was nine years old, so this review comes from the perspective of a real-life intermediate/advanced player. If you’ve never played badminton before, your experience might differ.
I mainly use this game for "shadow badminton" training at home when I can't access a real court.
Game Modes
The game has two main modes:
1. Match Mode – Play a standard match, either against an AI or online against other players.
2. Training Mode – This mode is quite useful because you can place a "ball machine" on the other side of the court. You can set its position and adjust where the shuttle lands on your side. You can also create sequences, mimicking real-life training drills.
However, adjusting the machine and shot placements could be more user-friendly.
UI Feedback
The UI could use some improvements:
1. Opening the menu does not pause the game.
2. There is no clear way to exit an online match if the opponent disconnects. I have to restart the game to continue playing.
3. Sometimes, button presses don’t register immediately, requiring multiple attempts.
Gameplay Experience
The gameplay feels very good, especially the shuttle’s trajectory. However, since a real racket isn't being used, certain shots can feel inconsistent. I’ve tried adjusting my grip on the controller to compensate for forehand and backhand shots.
Here are a few areas that could be improved:
1. Overhead backhand shots are difficult to execute – The racket often misses the shuttle, possibly due to movement tracking.
2. Drives don’t seem to work properly – My attempts usually result in weak shots or the shuttle going into the net.
3. Smash mechanics feel inconsistent – I haven’t been able to perform smashes consistently. Many attempts result in clears that go out of bounds.
4. Net shots require too much force – They feel harder to control compared to real badminton.
5. AI sometimes returns serves incorrectly – The AI returns serves to the wrong side when it should let the shuttle drop. I’m not sure if this happens in online matches as well.
6. Illegal serves are possible – The game allows throwing the shuttle up and serving from above, similar to tennis, which isn’t allowed in badminton.
7. AI movement could be improved – At times, the AI avatar moves in ways that don’t seem natural, making certain shots appear difficult to predict.
Final Thoughts
This is the best badminton VR game I’ve played so far, but refining the UI and improving shot mechanics would make it even better. If these areas are addressed, it could provide an even more realistic and enjoyable experience.
