Crash Bandicoot + Mario in 3D VR!
I’m only a few levels in, but wanted to take a moment to write my (first!) review, or rather first impressions of my early hours with the game.
I’ll start by saying I’m already wildly impressed! In Max Mustard, your head is essentially the camera floating above a traditional 3D platformer.
You can see your controllers in game and you’re controlling Max as you would Mario in one of his games.
Speaking of Mario, the inspirations in this game are immediately apparent. Max will collect giant golden coins and bounce on enemies’ heads.
Max’s jumping, wall sliding and wall jumping feel almost exactly like Mario Odyssey. It’s really well done.
More than that, I feel this game is Crash Bandicoot in VR. You have the linear level design, mostly straight paths forward with little detours and side paths. Then you have all the crates to bounce on and especially the ones with the ridges that break after a certain number of jumps.
To add their own unique twist and take advantage of your perspective as some disembodied, floating creeper, the game allows you the player to interact with the world around Max, as you progress. So you work together to reach the end.
As a big fan of platformers, I’m really impressed so far. Being able to see the full world around you, to spot collectibles or understand the scale and danger of some of Max’s jumps - it all feels so much more alive and immersive!
I’ll be posting some gameplay videos over on my YouTube channel, @KevinTheMurphy!
