Why It’s My Go-To VR Sport
As someone who has spent over a year with Racket Club on Meta Quest, it has undeniably become my favorite VR game—a true "must-play" that I find myself coming back to multiple times a day. While I've mostly stuck to playing against the AI, the core gameplay loop is just so compelling that it has replaced other titles like Eleven Table Tennis as my primary VR sport.
What Makes It So Addictive?
The game's strongest feature is its physics. The ball feels incredibly realistic and predictable, which makes for a satisfying and fun experience. The game is never frustrating because the ball reacts exactly as you'd expect, which is a huge credit to the developers. It's an excellent way to get a solid workout and get your body moving.
Another major positive is the development team. They are extremely responsive and dedicated to improving the game. I experienced an issue that I reported to them, and they resolved it quickly, which shows how much they care about their community.
Points of Critique and Room for Improvement
While the game is fantastic, there are a few areas that could use some polish.
* AI Opponents: The difficulty curve within a single tournament is quite steep. The third AI opponent can be surprisingly strong, and even after playing for a year, I can still struggle to beat them in the third-hardest tournament. Also, no matter how I adjust the settings, the AI avatars look a bit strange in their movements, which can break the immersion.
* Ranking System: The ranking system could be more transparent. It’s hard to track how points are awarded or deducted. For example, when you lose, it's not clear how many points you've lost, and even when you win a tournament, the points don't seem to update immediately on the leaderboard. It would be helpful to have a clearer display of how points are gained or lost for winning or losing at different stages of a tournament.
* Tournament Variety & Coach: I've only ever played the tennis-style game in tournaments, and I’m unsure if it's possible to change the sport to Spin Minton which I'd love to see. Additionally, the coach character repeats the same lines over and over, which can get annoying, and you're forced to click through his dialogue to start a new match.
* Multiplayer Connection: On the rare occasions that I've tried multiplayer, the experience wasn't great. Despite having a good internet connection, the lag makes it difficult to play, as the opponent's movements can appear glitchy. This has kept me from engaging more in multiplayer matches.
Despite these minor issues, Racket Club has captured a formula that makes it highly repeatable and fun. I'm constantly impressed with its ability to keep me engaged, and it stands out as the best sports titles on the Meta Quest platform.
