What an Amazing Experience!
TL:DR: After my own terrible pc issues and purchasing Add-on songs that caused install errors, I highly recommend! The immersion of being onstage with the band in front of a lively crowd is unlike any other virtual experience I've had yet! Wow!
I initially heard about Rockband VR when it released, but never thought I would be able to play it as I was a console player with a terrible PC. I then heard about the release of the Oculus Quest being a standalone device and searched immediately to see if Rockband VR would be playable without a PC or laptop, which didn't yield any positive results.
I finally decided to purchase a Quest 2 at the end of 2021. Out of a nostalgic love for Harmonix games, I bought Rockband VR as one of my first games. I plugged it into my terrible PC, bought a Microsoft controller adapter (which is another reason I now understand the requirement of a PC/laptop as the guitar controller connects via Bluetooth), and then launched the game.
I stood with excitement as a dream I've had for years was about to come true. I got to the first tutorial and my computer, as I suspected, was making my experience a choppy disaster. I was about to take off my headset when I realized I could make out the crowd standing in front of me, with my other band members on stage, looking at me to start the song by giving a nod to the drummer sitting at the rear. It felt as though I was so close to playing something spectacular, yet so far.
In the meantime, I became addicted to Audica, which is easily one of my favorite Quest games of all time.
May 2022, I finally saved up enough for a gaming laptop. I purchased a Predator as it wasn't terribly expensive and had the specs required to run Rockband VR.
I got home, hooked everything up, and launched the game via PC Link. It was buttery smooth! I walked onstage, nodded to the drummer, and began playing along to Blink 182. The crowd was jumping up and down, I could move around the stage, add pedal effects, and even smack the drummer's cymbal with the neck of my guitar. It was epic!
And then I chose to download some of the Add-on songs...
I intended to buy them all. I started with 2. Once they finished downloading, I was prompted to update my Rockband app. I tried, and it errored out. I tried to reinstall Rockband, but it errored out. I tried contacting Oculus support and we spent a week trying to troubleshoot. I factory reset my Quest 2, I updated drivers, disabled settings, reinstalled PC and phone app, everything that they suggested. Nothing worked.
I explained that it happened after I purchased the add-on songs. They finally listened and refunded the 2 songs as they usually don't refund DLC. As soon as they did, it downloaded immediately via PC link.
Was the hassle worth it? Absolutely. This is now my favorite game to play on the Quest. I'm going through the story and checking out new venues, learning about chord combos, and shredding solos in my favorite songs. The bandmates have their own personalities, the catalog is diverse, and the immersion is phenomenal.
If you have a compatible guitar controller, the controller adapter that attaches to the end of the guitar, and a decent PC/laptop, I highly recommend this experience!
