Outsmart Your Enemies in Tactical Multiplayer Game ‘Breachers,’ Available Now on Meta Quest 2

The most exciting multiplayer matches are those that come down to the wire, whether it was because of a last-minute kill or a heroic play made by a fellow teammate. That’s the kind of experience Breachers was designed for: One team has to infiltrate and defuse a bomb, while the other needs to protect it. And the clock is ticking as both sides try to use a variety of tactics and equipment to complete their objectives.

The tense multiplayer FPS is now available on Meta Quest 2 + Pro for $29.99 USD. Breachers supports cross-buy, so purchasing the game on the Meta Quest Store will give you the Rift S version as well!

In Breachers, you’ll be playing as either the Enforcers (the attacking team that has to break into a compound and stop the bomb) or the Revolters (the team who needs to fortify and defend their position). Both sides have access to a wide range of weapons that can be upgraded with different attachments throughout a match, as well as hi-tech gadgetry like drones and invisibility cloaks. Communicating with your squad is essential as you try to anticipate the other team’s moves and defenses.

You can play the objective-based Bomb Defusal mode across three expansive maps—including a luxurious villa in the middle of nowhere and the top floors of a skyscraper—or battle it out in traditional Team Deathmatch while inside an obstacle-filled training facility. Study their layouts carefully, as that’ll give your team a huge advantage when it comes to planning your routes and outwitting your enemies.

To celebrate the launch of Breachers, we spoke to Creative Director Jeroen Dessaux about what it was like to make such an intense multiplayer experience, what types of gadgets are in the game, and some important tips to know before jumping online.

Tell us a bit about your studio. Where did the idea for Breachers come from?

Jeroen Dessaux: Triangle Factory is a VR company based in Belgium that’s been dedicated to creating innovative VR experiences since the Oculus DK1. With a team of 40 highly talented individuals, our focus has been on developing the best VR shooters in the industry.

After the success of our previous Quest release, Hyper Dash, we wanted to create another shooter but take things up a notch. While Hyper Dash was a thrilling game to play, we realized that it could be challenging for spectators to follow the action. So we set out to create a slower-paced game that’d be engaging to both watch and play.

In our search for inspiration, we surveyed the VR and non-VR shooter markets and saw an opportunity to develop a breaching and entering type of game, which hadn’t yet been explored in VR. We transformed a Hyper Dash build into a tactical shooter with rappelling, vaulting, and breaching, and quickly realized the potential for fun and engaging gameplay. Convinced we had a good concept, we ditched the prototype code base and started with a clean slate.

With this approach, we were able to refine and improve upon our initial concept, resulting in an exceptional gaming experience that’s both immersive and enjoyable.

What kind of gadgets can you use in the game? Do you have any favorites?

JD: Each team has access to unique gadgets that can be used to either attack or defend. The strategic use of these gadgets can greatly impact the outcome of each round, making them a crucial aspect of gameplay.

When looking at our statistics, these gadgets are in the top three:

  • The breaching foam, an essential tool for opening up new pathways into a bombsite. It's particularly satisfying to use in VR: simply spray it onto a wall or hatch, and then detonate it to surprise the enemy team. Alternatively, you can use it as a distraction and enter the bombsite from another direction.
  • The healing syringe, which lives up to its name by quickly healing yourself or your teammates when they take damage. This can be a game-changer in clutch situations where every bit of health counts.
  • The cloaking device, a powerful gadget that makes you nearly invisible to your enemies, especially when standing still and holding an angle. It can be a deadly weapon in the hands of a skilled player who knows how to use it effectively to catch their opponents off-guard.
Breachers looks impressively realistic for a mobile VR game. What are you most proud of pulling off on Meta Quest 2, and why?

JD: It certainly was a challenge and we’re definitely pushing the limit of the hardware. We’re happy we managed to include specular reflections thanks to specialized shaders, together with high resolution textures and still maintaining geometric details in the environments. Thanks to that, our water and shiny surfaces look spec(tac)ular. ;)

Our technical and art teams deserve a huge amount of credit for developing a highly specialized pipeline from Blender to Unity, which was crucial in achieving our visual and performance target. We have a post coming up soon on the Unity Blog where we’ll do a deep dive into our pipeline, so keep an eye out for that if you're interested in the technical details.

Were there any key lessons you learned from Hyper Dash that helped you out on Breachers?

JD: We strongly believe in getting community feedback. We’ll continue to do that with Breachers. Besides that, we knew that we had to build a better pipeline and tools as mentioned before. Another thing: We avoided releasing “blockout maps” with the alpha because the footage will be out there forever. You can still find some old Hyper Dash videos with maps in an early stage and we really wanted to avoid that with Breachers.

You built a huge following on Discord during the open alpha. Did that catch the team by surprise?

JD: Yes! We just thought, “let’s do the same as we did with Hyper Dash.” As soon as we launched the open alpha for Breachers, it became apparent that this game resonated more with players. Although we still cherish Hyper Dash and continue to support it, we believe that Breachers has even greater potential.

Has the Discord community helped influence the development of the game?

JD: Absolutely! We take our community's feedback very seriously. Every suggestion is carefully recorded as a ticket in our system and we review them on a weekly basis. Our players have pointed out bugs that we would’ve never discovered ourselves, allowing us to efficiently address them. This commitment to quality and stable releases ultimately leads to an improved experience for all players.

Do you have any fun anecdotes or moments from playtesting?

JD: Some of the glitches that showed up during development are hilarious. One bug we had rotated the characters’ heads 90 degrees to the side for some players, which was extremely creepy. There was also that one time where our lead producer panic reloaded with a grenade instead of a magazine while the whole company was spectating.

What are some basic strategies players should know?

JD: Here are some quick tips for new players:

  • Unmute yourself when joining a server and make sure to communicate with your team—that’s half the fun of the game. Be respectful and have fun!
  • During a match, always try to split up your group so you at least come in from two different angles. You’re an easy target if you all enter the building from the same window.
  • It’s often wise to buy some crucial gadgets versus better and more expensive weapons.
  • Don’t forget to upgrade your weapon with attachments! With the buy menu open, just grab any weapon from your body and hold it in front of you to see what you can upgrade.
What kind of updates can we expect to see in the future?

JD: We have a roadmap that players can find on the whiteboard in the main menu of the game. Our first big content update will focus on competitive matchmaking—we’ll introduce a ranking system based on your Elo rating. This means you’ll get a certain rank that can go up or down depending on how many competitive matches you win or lose.

Besides that we’re designing a new game mode, and we have two more maps with unique locations already in the works!

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

JD: We really hope you’ll enjoy the game for many years to come, and you feel our commitment to making this one of the best VR games out there. If you want to be involved, please stop by our Discord and let us know what you think.

Thank you, and have fun with Breachers!
