Prepare for Battle: ‘Contractors Showdown’ Drops Onto the Meta Quest Platform Today
Today’s the day, contractors. Hopefully your aim is sharp and your wits are on high alert, because Contractors Showdown has officially launched on the Quest platform. Starting today, you can now drop onto one of the largest maps in a first-person shooter in VR to date with up to 59 other players. Between the dozens of guns, gadgets, upgrades, skins, and more to discover and deploy, you’re in for an immense battle royale shooter experience in VR.
To get a clearer picture of just how impressive of a release Contractors Showdown is, we took some time to speak with Cong Ku, the co-founder and game director from Caveman Game Studio.
Cong Ku: Contractors Showdown is the ultimate VR battle royale experience, featuring heart-pounding action and intense combat on a massive 4x4 km map. With up to 60 players battling it out for survival, players will immerse themselves in a high-stakes showdown where only the strongest will emerge victorious. With the game optimized for standalone VR devices, players can expect seamless gameplay and unparalleled immersion. Get ready to drop into the fray, outmaneuver your opponents, and fight to be the last one standing in Contractors Showdown.
CK: When crafting the core game mode for Contractors Showdown, our primary focus was to ensure that the gameplay felt immersive and engaging in the VR environment. Given that Contractors Showdown is a Battle Royale game set in a vast map, we dedicated significant attention to movement mechanics to enhance player mobility and tactical options.
One of the key design choices we made was implementing intuitive VR interactions for movement. We introduced a parachuting mechanic that allows players to navigate the expansive map with ease, providing a seamless and immersive experience. Additionally, we incorporated ziplines throughout the map to offer players efficient traversal options and strategic repositioning opportunities.
By integrating these mechanics, we aimed to enhance the overall gameplay experience in Contractors Showdown, providing players with fluid movement controls and strategic elements that contribute to the excitement and intensity of the VR Battle Royale genre.

CK: In VR games, the immersive experience is paramount. By providing players with an interactive base camp between matches, we`re enhancing the sense of immersion and presence within the game world. The space serves as more than just a traditional menu interface; it`s a virtual environment where players can engage in various activities, explore, and interact with objects.
This not only adds depth to the gameplay experience but also allows players to take a break from intense matches and immerse themselves in a more relaxed setting. Overall, incorporating an interactive base camp adds richness and depth to the VR gaming experience, making it more engaging and memorable for players.
CK: Implementing support for up to 60 players on standalone headsets in Contractors Showdown required extensive optimization efforts on both the client and server sides. With over 20,000 interactable objects present in each match, efficient management of object ticks and replication relevancy was essential to ensure smooth gameplay within the constraints of limited CPU resources.
Furthermore, given the expansive size of the map, effective level streaming management was crucial. We undertook engine-level enhancements to minimize streaming stutters and maintain optimal memory utilization throughout gameplay. These optimizations were instrumental in delivering a seamless and immersive multiplayer experience for players in Contractors Showdown.

CK: Transitioning from the competitive first-person shooter realm of Contractors to the expansive battle royale experience of Showdown presented several significant challenges. Chief among these was optimizing the game for the Quest 2's mobile chipset to accommodate up to 60 players battling across a 4x4 km map. This required careful balance and optimization to ensure smooth performance and gameplay on a constrained hardware platform.
Additionally, Contractors Showdown introduces a plethora of new gameplay interactions compared to the original Contractors. From inventory management to map navigation and calling in airstrikes, players are faced with a variety of immersive VR interactions. Ensuring that these interactions are both fluid and immersive presented another significant challenge during development. We aimed to strike a delicate balance between intuitive controls and immersive gameplay, enhancing the overall player experience in Contractors Showdown.
CK: After the launch of Contractors Showdown, players can expect ongoing post-launch support with regular updates. These updates will include additional content such as new game modes, map layout changes, and cosmetic items. Additionally, players can look forward to various in-game events hosted by the development team. We are committed to providing a dynamic and engaging experience for our players with continuous updates and new content.
CK: As the game progresses, players can expect regular updates to the island map, including layout changes to keep the gameplay experience fresh and exciting. Additionally, we are considering the possibility of introducing alternate maps and additional game modes in the future. While I can't share specific details at this time, we are committed to evolving the game to provide new and engaging experiences for our players.
CK: In a Battle Royale game like Contractors Showdown, there's no one-size-fits-all strategy. Unlike traditional game modes such as Team Deathmatch, players have the freedom to adopt various playstyles. You can opt for a stealthy approach, avoiding confrontations and focusing on survival until the end. Alternatively, if you prefer a more aggressive playstyle, stick with your teammates, communicate effectively, and utilize tactical items and perks to your advantage. Engaging in combat can be thrilling and adrenaline-inducing, but remember to balance risk and reward. Ultimately, the goal is to be the last one standing, regardless of your chosen approach.

CK: Personally, I'm drawn to Seahorn Town for its stunning scenery. However, within our dev team, preferences vary. Some prefer locations teeming with loot, like the Power Plants, while others favor spots with intricate layouts for strategic maneuvering, such as the Radar Station. As for least favorite areas to get stuck in a firefight, we generally try to avoid open fields and narrow corridors where cover is sparse.
