Gear Up, Grind, Survive: ‘Frenzy Extinction’ is Out Now on Meta Quest
The Frenzy Virus is back—and what’s worse, it’s mutated. Hordes of monsters known as The Ridden now roam the world, looking for helpless victims.
Luckily you’re far from helpless. Team up with friends and fight against overwhelming odds in Frenzy Extinction, out now on Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro.
Frenzy Extinction is the sequel to the action-packed Frenzy VR, continuing the story in a stylish post-apocalyptic world overrun by mutants. Gear up and get ready for the grind, wielding everything from hammers to assault rifles to fantastical staffs in order to survive the onslaught of enemies.
Just be careful the power doesn’t go to your head—or remove someone else’s. Simulated dismemberment means you can easily cut down your foes, but it also means that buzzsaw you’re wielding is just as deadly to your so-called “teammates.” It’ll take coordination and communication if you all want to make it out alive, especially when facing fearsome bosses like the Terrorfin.
We sat down with Stevan Ryland, Founder & CEO at Innoverse Games, to discuss the upcoming release of Frenzy Extinction, lessons learned from working on Frenzy VR, and what the team’s plans are for the future.
Stevan Ryland: The Frenzy Virus is central to Frenzy Extinction’s plot. Following a devastating viral outbreak, the majority of the population has been transformed into monstrous creatures known as "The Ridden." As a survivor with unique abilities granted to you by a specific mutation of the virus, your mission is to use your power to stop the virus's spread and defeat the mutants and the powerful abominations that have taken control of the city.
In terms of its connection to Frenzy VR, Frenzy Extinction is set in the same universe but tells a self-contained story. It’s designed to be accessible to new players without requiring knowledge of the previous game, making it an ideal entry point for those unfamiliar with the series.

SR: Frenzy Extinction employs ragdoll physics and dismemberment, which adds a layer of chaos and realism. This allows for highly dynamic interactions, such as enemies reacting to weapons in unique—often humorous—ways.
The game also features over 50 customizable weapons, so players have a wide range of tools that they can tailor to their playstyle—whether by adding attachments and sprays to guns, or getting wacky and turning a machete into a mailbox! And Frenzy Extinction introduces randomized powers, which gives the game a roguelike feel and ensures each playthrough feels different.
With 18 bosses spread across the 9 story missions and unique variations of mutants showing up on every map, Frenzy Extinction provides an ever-evolving challenge—including themed bosses that match the environment, adding a layer of immersion and strategy.
Plus, the game supports up to four players in co-op mode. You’ll need to work as a team to complete objectives and find the hidden secrets and optional boss fights that are waiting for you.

SR: In Frenzy Extinction, progression is centered around two in-game currencies, Necronium and Scrap, which allow players to unlock new areas, weapons, and abilities.
Necronium is collected from defeated enemies and used during a run to unlock new areas, purchase and upgrade weapons, and activate perks. As you progress through waves of increasingly difficult enemies, you’ll gain more Necronium and use it to enhance your loadout.
Scrap is a permanent currency that players collect during runs and can carry back to the homebase, even if they die or leave the map. It’s used to unlock new weapons, upgrades, and abilities for future runs, making players stronger and giving them more tactical options.
There’s a lot to unlock too. Melee weapons range from a basic hammer to advanced sci-fi blades, and can dismember enemies and interact with the physics-based environment. Melee weapons also have a special ability that closes the gap between guns and melee. These can get pretty crazy, such as activating a large spinning saw blade on the end of a baseball bat, or a beam of energy shooting from the tip of a spear!
Guns range from rusty revolvers to a state-of-the-art military sniper, and you can add up to four attachments, weapon skins, and such to create something really unique. And then there are special weapons that we reward for completing some of the secrets in Frenzy Extinction.
My favorite melee weapon is a stop sign that has been sharpened into a makeshift axe. While it may look unassuming, the special ability creates a defensive area around the weapon to give you a bit of breathing room when being chased down by the horde! For guns, it’s got to be the energy pistol. Easy to use but packs a punch—you’ll see limbs flying everywhere.

SR: We definitely learned a great deal from Frenzy VR.
With Frenzy VR, we received a lot of feedback regarding the combat mechanics. Players loved the physicality of the interactions but wanted more variety and depth. With Frenzy Extinction, we took that feedback to heart and focused on making the combat more dynamic and varied, introducing more enemy types, deeper weapon variety, and incorporating ragdoll physics and dismemberment.
Many Frenzy VR players also loved the intense action but felt there was limited progression. That’s why we introduced persistent progression in Frenzy Extinction, allowing players to use Scrap to unlock new weapons, abilities, and upgrades across multiple playthroughs. We also expanded on the roguelike elements by adding randomized powers, making each run feel fresh and different.
Enemy variety in Frenzy VR was also somewhat limited, so for Frenzy Extinction we expanded to over 30 unique enemies and added elite units and boss fights in each map. We want to keep players on their toes with surprises and challenges that go beyond simply fighting hordes.
Lastly, Frenzy VR had no multiplayer, which became a point of frustration for players who wanted to share the experience with friends. For Frenzy Extinction, we made multiplayer a core focus, enabling up to four players in co-op across all maps.

SR: After Frenzy Extinction launches, we have an exciting lineup of post-launch content to keep players engaged and coming back for more.
Expect themed events around holidays such as Halloween, Christmas, and more. These will include unique cosmetic items, limited-time boss fights, and holiday-themed maps or levels. For example, Halloween might bring spooky enemies, while Christmas could offer festive weapon skins or decorations in the game’s homebase.
We’ll also be adding new maps with fresh challenges, bosses, and unique looks, so players can keep exploring and discovering new content long after Frenzy Extinction’s initial release. And we’ll be introducing new weapon types with unique abilities, so players can further customize their loadouts.
On the multiplayer front, in addition to the regular horde modes, we’ll be introducing multiplayer challenge modes that reward teamwork and coordination. We also have plans to introduce some PvP modes to Frenzy Extinction in the future.
And of course, we’ll be continuously fine-tuning weapon stats, enemy behavior, and abilities to ensure the gameplay feels fair and satisfying for everyone. As players discover new strategies, we’ll adjust the balance to keep the game fresh and prevent any single tactic from becoming too dominant. We aim to make each weapon and ability viable in different scenarios.
If you’re ready to embrace the grind, you’ll find Frenzy Extinction on the Meta Quest Store.
