It’s time to head back to the moon: At this year’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, developer Vertical Robot revealed that it’ll release Red Matter 2—the follow-up to its hit sci-fi puzzle-solving game—on the Quest Platform later this summer. The sequel takes place right after the surreal and mysterious events of Red Matter, with players reprising the role of Sasha Riss. A distress signal from an old friend kicks off a whole new adventure, and Riss has to travel across the solar system to rescue him and somehow stop the deadly Red Matter that threatens the universe.

With Red Matter 2, Vertical Robot greatly increased the size and scope of its alternate history tale. One big change is that the gameplay is no longer confined to just solving puzzles in escape room-like environments. Red Matter 2’s story will take you to several new areas, including Triton (Neptune’s largest moon) and Toska Station, a military base that orbits the rings of Saturn. And thanks to your new jetpack, you’ll be able to freely navigate through the platforming sections within these levels.

In addition to your equipment from the first game, you’ll have access to some new tools as well. One lets you hack computer terminals, and another is a special gun that helps you solve environmental puzzles and deal with other surprises on your journey.

When Red Matter came out on Quest in 2019, it set a new benchmark for how good mobile VR games can look. And Vertical Robot is further pushing the envelope with Red Matter 2. You’ll be able to see that for yourself when it comes to the Quest Platform this summer.
