‘Metamorphosis’ Brings Kafka-Inspired Insect Adventure to Meta Quest Today
One morning, Gregor Samsa awoke to find himself transformed into a giant insect. Maybe you’ve read Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis before—but have you lived it?
Today you can experience Metamorphosis in VR, as Black Sun Productions brings developer Ovid Works’ adaptation to Meta Quest. And okay, “adaptation” might be too strong a word. Metamorphosis mostly uses Kafka as a jumping off point. You are Gregor Samsa, and you do awake one morning to find yourself transformed into a cockroach.
But you’re not giant—far from it. You’ll use your newfound insect powers to traverse the human world, skittering across oversized desks and bookshelves as you try to make your way to the mysterious Tower, save a friend, and return to your past life. Keep an eye on the sky, though. Humans are notoriously disgusted by bugs, and you may occasionally see a massive hand swinging down to crush you.

You’re not alone down here, either. During your travels, you’ll discover an entire insect civilization that in many ways mirrors our own, both the good and the bad. Some will help you on your journey, others will force you to go to the insect equivalent of the Customs Office and meet with insect-lawyers. Very Kafkaesque.
Metamorphosis is a strange and surreal (and extremely memorable) experience, made even more immersive in VR. This is maybe the closest you can get to transforming into an insect yourself—though unlike poor Gregor Samsa, regaining your humanity is as easy as pulling off your headset.
