Get Creative and Learn About Robotics with ‘My Robot!’, Available Today on Meta Quest
For as long as there have been video games, there have been experiences that use the fun of games to teach valuable real-world skills — not just how to jump on turtles or slay demons. My Robot! continues that tradition in virtual reality, giving people the chance to build virtual robots that can then explore their physical environments.
My Robot! brings you into the world of robotics with snap-together virtual kits, allowing you to construct your robot quickly and easily, while still learning some of the fundamentals of engineering and robotics. Each kit highlights the different uses for various components, mixing the ease and fun of creation with technical knowledge.
Once they’re built, you can control and guide your robots to complete different challenges and tasks, and with Meta Quest’s Passthrough mode, those challenges are placed in the room around you. Challenges come with different themes and goals — like making a speedy, agile bot or using one to hit objects that create different sounds — allowing you to learn how to build your robots for particular tasks and test them in a variety of ways.
There’s also a freebuild mode, so as you learn more about the process of constructing, controlling, testing, and analyzing your robots, you’ll also have the opportunity to apply those lessons to robots you can build from scratch.
With My Robot! hitting the Meta Horizon Store today, we sat down with Brandon Pittser, Vice President of Marketing at Filament Games, to talk about what people can expect from the game, what they might learn, and what it takes to make a fun and educational experience.
Brandon Pittser: My Robot! is designed for approachability and pick-up-and-play immediacy. Players can jump right in since Agile Acrobats, the first kit, is completely free to play. The experience begins with selecting that environment, and each one comes with two corresponding robot kits. The kits walk players step by step through the building process with narrated instructions. The parts snap into place visually, and the correct placement in each step is outlined on the model itself, which makes the whole process feel more familiar to anyone who’s built LEGO kits or model cars. As players advance through the guided building process, they also assign controls to their robots. These inputs are tested at several points in the building flow, which helps get players used to the My Robot! systems.
BP: The game introduces players to an engineering design process that gradually integrates symbols, key terms, and domain-specific language in context. Along the way, players build an understanding of robotics fundamentals relevant to the components they’re using in each kit. The kits also highlight real-world robotics applications by connecting different mechanism types to familiar uses. Beyond the technical side, the experience builds transferable soft skills. Critical thinking, persistence, analysis, and creativity all come into play through both the guided kits and freebuild mode, where players are encouraged to experiment.

BP: Mixed reality makes the experience personal by transforming the player’s space into a robotics lab that can transform at the push of a button. The MR environments fill the room with interactive elements that robots can trigger, and each one encourages different playstyles. The musical garden invites audio experimentation, whereas the obstacle course focuses on performance and speed. Robots can navigate across surfaces mapped in XR using the Meta Quest 3, giving players the ability to see their creations operate in their own real-world environment.
BP: Challenges give players structured goals for their creations. Percussion Pond transforms the space into a musical garden where robots can strike and interact with instruments to create a sonic wonderland. Cranky Cadavers has players fending off waves of zombies in an arcade-style survival scenario, complete with scoring for how long they can hold out. Agile Acrobots focuses on speed and agility, challenging players to complete obstacle courses in timed trials. Together, these challenges showcase different robotic capabilities and highlight the versatility of player creations.
BP: Our earlier titles really resonated with sandbox players who thrive on open-ended objectives and the freedom to tinker. What we learned from those titles is that while experienced builders love optimization and complexity, newcomers to robotics benefit from more structure. With My Robot!, we designed a stepwise building process that introduces the fundamentals quickly without overwhelming users. It creates a smoother entry point for people who are curious about robotics but haven’t had hands-on experience before.

BP: The biggest challenge is balance. We want to present robotics concepts accurately, without oversimplifying to the point of misconception. At the same time, the experience has to be immediate, playful, and fun, so that users feel engaged right away. Striking that balance between rigor and entertainment is one of the hardest parts of educational game design, but it’s also what makes these projects so rewarding.
BP: Some Assembly Required leaned more into its narrative framing and lighthearted humor through goofy human non-player characters. My Robot! puts a sharper focus on pure robot-building and the technical wonder of mixed reality. It introduces kit-based structures similar to model car or LEGO sets, which makes the building process feel hands-on and accessible. It also emphasizes interactivity within the player’s own space, letting them use the provided robot kits or experiment with custom builds. That flexibility reflects feedback we heard from Some Assembly Required players who wanted opportunities to bring their robots into the real world using the Meta Quest 3’s amazing passthrough capabilities.

BP: We’re really proud of the robots built into each environment. Every kit has its own personality, and they’re designed to highlight different mechanical abilities. On top of that, the freebuild system is the same one we used in Some Assembly Required, where we saw players design everything from functional machines to wildly imaginative contraptions. Based on that, we’re confident that the community will create the same kind of inventive and surprising robots in My Robot!.
