‘Riven,’ the Sequel to Myst, is Coming to Meta Quest VR Later This Year

“Perhaps the ending has not yet been written.” More than 30 years ago, those words introduced players to the esoteric world of Myst—and they proved prophetic. Spurred on by Myst’s success, developer Cyan returned in 1997 with an ambitious sequel, Riven.

Cyan previously announced they were working on remaking Riven in Unreal Engine 5, but today we have some great news: Riven will release on Meta Quest 3 as well. You can wishlist it today.

The Riven remake is a long time coming. Originally released in 1997 on five CD-ROMs, Riven propelled Cyan’s evocative storytelling to new heights. Delving into the lore that Myst barely hinted at, Riven tightly integrated its puzzles into a sprawling and decaying Age, plunging players into a conflict between the villainous ruler Gehn and those rebelling against him, the Moiety. It’s a masterpiece, both as a puzzle game and as a part of the Myst story.

But while Myst has been remade multiple times over the years, Riven’s scope and cinematic flare made it a tougher game to rescue from the technological limitations of its era. The upcoming Riven remake will let players explore the iconic world in full 3D for the first time ever—and in VR, as well.

This is the full Riven release, start to finish, though Cyan also adjusted certain puzzles to make them slightly more forgiving than the 1997 original. (Especially the marble puzzle. Riven fans will understand.)
