To celebrate the launch of the latest and greatest entry in immersive Star Wars storytelling from ILM, we sat down with Senior UI Artist Amy Dai to talk shop.
Amy Dai: I’m a Senior UI Artist at ILM working on interactive projects. I’ve always had an interest in pursuing something in the creative field for as long as I can remember. After some trial and error, entertainment and gaming is where I landed. The craft of constantly balancing the visuals with close observation of player actions captured my heart.
AD: This wasn’t my first Star Wars memory necessarily, but it was a really memorable one. I had been isolating myself due to some personal life struggles during that time when one of my good friends invited the group over to his house to watch Return of the Jedi on laserdisc. In that movie, and in that dark room, I found camaraderie and a refreshed sense of hope.
AD: As the Lead UI Artist, I helped to maintain a healthy relationship between aesthetics, functionality, and user experience.
AD: I like all three modes for different reasons. If I had to choose one, it would be Adventure Mode for me. I’m a sucker for a good story and cinematics, and in Adventure Mode, I get to experience that in both VR and mixed reality.
AD: While there are always multiple ways to tell the same story, I believe the mixed reality aspect brings a unique experience that supports a combination of storytelling and player experience. In VR, you get the full immersion into the Star Wars world, setting characters at full scale, grabbing any objects that sparks your interest. In MR, you’re able to see larger props in their entirety. Both modes work hand in hand to paint a full picture.
AD: They both have their advantages for sure. At the moment, I really appreciate the blending of digital content with physical surroundings when it’s outside of my living space, but when it’s inside my home, I prefer VR — just because my apartment is quite small and being in VR makes me feel like I’m in a bigger space than I actually am!
AD: I think it’s fair to say that most Star Wars fans have a podracing fantasy. To be able to deliver a taste of what that feels like without people having to go to some place with specialized equipment makes me really happy. Being able to try podracing in the comfort of your own home means we’re able to deliver that experience with a more accessible audience, so more people can experience the magic!
AD: Volo is a very relatable character, and their relationship with Sebulba is also very understandable. At a very impressionable young age, we’ve all looked up to people as our heroes. As we grow and get to know them more, sometimes they fall short, and sometimes our values no longer align. It helps Volo’s character to develop more fully as we see their experiences shape their opinions and actions throughout the story.
AD: Deland! He’s just such a kind and friendly little guy who wants to support all his friends.
AD: I would hope that people understand that there is no “wrong way” to enjoy this game. We really focused on providing a mix of experiences for everyone. What you like about the game may be very different from what your friend likes, and we’re happy about that. Star Wars truly is for a world built for everyone.
Star Wars: Beyond Victory is ready to let you live out your own podracing fantasies today. Grab it now on the Meta Horizon Store for $19.99 USD.
