PORTABLE POSSIBILITIES
The next wave of innovation will soon reshape your world.
MUSCLE-ACTIVATED TECHNOLOGY
Electromyography (EMG) technology is a pioneering technology that could enable control of smart devices throughout the day with simple gestures like finger taps, thumb swipes, and wrist rolls — no mouse, touchscreen, or remote needed. Beyond these simple gestures, this technology also has the potential to detect more complex interactions, like handwriting and typing on a surface.
EMG measures the activity of the muscles at the wrist when gesturing with the wristband, detecting signals based on what users intend to do, such as clicking/selecting or scrolling. Machine learning turns those signals into digital commands for your smart devices while haptic feedback confirms the gesture was performed.
With response times measured in milliseconds, EMG offers fast input with minimal effort, reliably recognizing your muscle movements even if your hands are out of view of a glasses camera.
Equity and accessibility
The Meta Neural Band provides out-of-the-box functionality for a wide range of users. Machine learning models were trained on data from a large number of consenting research participants to develop a system for everyday use. On the research front, we continue to evaluate and innovate EMG's ability to support individuals with varying levels of hand dexterity and function.
A notable example is the partnership with Dr. Doug Weber's lab at Carnegie Mellon University, which aims to empower everyone, including those with hand paralysis, with the ability to connect with friends and loved ones with ease.

Responsible innovation
At Meta, we actively collaborate with scientists, policymakers, and leading academic experts to ensure the responsible development of new technologies. These partnerships have involved roundtable discussions, policy panels, and guidance from ethicists.
We also continue to support advanced university research programs focused on EMG technology and its applications. Insights gained from these collaborations have informed our EMG implementation and established a robust framework for prioritizing user privacy and safety.
EMG stands for electromyography.
EMG, or surface electromyography, measures muscle activity at the wrist from electrical signals based on a user's intended action. Machine learning translates these signals into digital commands, making EMG a fast and powerful input.
EMG sensors in the Meta Neural Band provide an easy, lightweight, and natural way to navigate, select, and deliver input to Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses and the next generation of computing platforms, all while staying present in the world and with the people around you.
EMG sensors track the muscle activity at the wrist from electrical signals based on a user's intended action, like moving your hand or making a subtle gesture.
Yes. EMG at the wrist is a safe and non-invasive technology — it does not require implants or surgery, in contrast to some clinical EMG approaches. EMG sensors can only sense user outputs using electrical signals from muscle activations — it does not provide information back to the body. Read more about the process of developing wearable EMG technology.
The EMG wristband processes electrical signals from muscle movement, and acceleration, rotation, orientation data of the wrist and hand.
EMG wristbands are designed with user privacy in mind. The machine learning that translates EMG signals into digital commands is processed locally on-device.
Unlike camera-captured hand tracking, EMG doesn't require hands to be within a camera's field of view, allowing for more flexibility in interaction, and can function effectively in low-light conditions. Compared to motion sensing, EMG provides high precision with low latency, capturing gestures like tapping and typing. Accelerometers typically used in motion sensing are not able to pick up gestures used for tapping and typing.
