In-Flight Entertainment: Introducing Travel Mode for Meta Quest 2 & 3

This is your captain speaking: We’ve reached our cruising altitude, and you’re now free to move about the metaverse.

That’s right, we’re introducing Travel Mode on Meta Quest 2 and 3, so your friendly neighborhood headset just got travel friendlier. ✈️

Travel Mode turns Quest into the ultimate in-flight entertainment device, so you can watch movies on a massive virtual screen, kick back with a game or meditation app, and even get some work done in private. And thanks to our headsets’ balanced, ergonomic design, you can enjoy it all comfortably, no neck pillow required.

Say you’re on a flight with complimentary Wi-Fi and a selection of movies and TV shows you can enjoy on your tablet or laptop. Your Quest might detect the airline Wi-Fi, prompt you to join the network, and automatically launch the browser so you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the show. Plus you’ll have access to your library of Quest content (be sure to check if a specific game or app requires an internet connection ahead of time for the best experience).

We specially tuned our algorithms to account for the motion of an airplane, so you’ll have a stable and consistent experience in Travel Mode—even when looking out the window. 👀 Travel Mode is optimized for use on planes to start, and we plan to add support for other modes of transportation like trains in the future.

To get started, opt in under the Experimental features section of your Settings menu. You’ll then be able to toggle Travel Mode on and off from Quick Settings. And depending on which airline you’re flying, your headset may automatically detect when you’re on an airplane and recommend turning on Travel Mode to make the experience as seamless as possible. Friendly reminder that you may need to restart your headset to see the new feature. Visit the Help Center for more information on Travel Mode.

We’re also excited to announce a new pilot program (pun intended) with Lufthansa! Together, we’ll outfit selected flights for customers of the new Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Suite with a variety of custom, dedicated MR content spanning entertainment, travel, wellness, games, and more—all designed to run on Quest 3 in Travel Mode. Meta Business Partner MSM.digital will create content and provide device setup, distribution, management, and technical support, in close collaboration with Meta and Lufthansa. This is a watershed moment for the broader industry: the first time an airline will offer access to Quest 3 headsets in a commercial in-flight setting.

“The Lufthansa Group has already been using extended reality in training and marketing for some time—and now, during this test case, we are first mover for this innovative entertainment offering. Through the cooperation with Meta, two innovative market leaders can open the next chapter of in-flight entertainment and offer guests completely new experiences,” says Björn Becker, Head of Future Intercontinental Experience Lufthansa Group.

Beginning this summer, Business Class Suite Passengers on the selected flights will be able to:

  • Enjoy an immersive cinema experience with select movies and TV shows
  • Listen to prominent travel podcasters and see their stories come to life through spatial videos and select 360-degree video content
  • Discover travel destinations from a bird’s-eye view with virtual sightseeing previews before you arrive
  • Play interactive games like Connect Four and Chess
  • Relax with active meditation exercises or enjoy a passive, lean-back experience

From carry-on to carry-all, Quest 3 is the perfect companion for all your travels, near and far. Its lightweight, all-in-one design means you can easily toss it in a backpack, duffel bag, or the optional Quest 3 Carrying Case and take it with you on the go. Got an extended layover or long-distance flight in your future? Grab an Elite Strap with Battery for some extra juice. You can use Quest 3 to sneak in a workout from your hotel room or play some Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) on a massive virtual screen without needing to pack a console. And with a price tag that won’t break the bank, you can up your travel game with enough left over to fund your next adventure.
