Meta Quest v57 Update: Unsend Image Messages, Horizon Feed, Avatars Update, and More

The dog days of summer are in the rearview mirror while autumn lingers on the horizon. As you enjoy this liminal seasonal space, why not join us for another Meta Quest software update? That’s right, it’s time for v57, which ushers in a convenient “unsend” feature for messaging on the platform, your new and improved Horizon Feed, and more.

Details below, and as always, this is your friendly reminder that our software updates roll out gradually. If you don’t see the v57 update yet, remain calm. It’s on its way and should be in your virtual hands soon.

Unsending Image Messages in VR + the Meta Quest Mobile App

There are few things as irritating as accidentally hitting “send” on a message too soon. Or sending a message to the wrong person. That’s why we’re rolling out a way to unsend image messages in VR and the Meta Quest mobile app in Australia, Canada, Iceland, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the US.

Just hover over the offending image message in VR (or click on it in the Meta Quest mobile app), select “Unsend message,” and poof! It’s like it never happened. You’ll see a confirmation message that you unsent a message, and the recipient will see a notification that a message was unsent for transparency’s sake.

So go ahead: Message like no one’s watching. Your mistakes are safe with us.

Introducing Your Horizon Feed

In the past when you put on your Meta Quest headset, you were greeted with Explore. With v57, we’re replacing it with Horizon Feed.

The Meta Quest experience includes Meta Horizon features like your profile, home, groups, worlds, and now Horizon Feed. Horizon Feed is your go-to to find content relevant to your passions and interests. And you’ll find new content to explore in Feed, like games, apps, and Reels. Express yourself with the latest Avatar digital outfits and jump into popular VR destinations.

Horizon Feed is built with age-appropriate experiences in mind, factoring in the logged-in account user’s indicated age, Meta Quest parental supervision settings, and content ratings like those from the IARC and/or ESRB used by the Meta Quest Store.

Please note that you may not see these changes right away. We’re rolling out Feed gradually across Quest headsets, followed by the Meta Quest mobile app.

Avatars Update: Defined By the Details

Representation matters, and it’s important that you’re comfortable with how your Avatar represents you. But the devil is in the details: The nuance and diversity in our hair colors, skin tones (and undertones), and how we apply cosmetics are what make us unique.

With v57, we’re rolling out a new update to our avatars to help bring those details and more to life. Now you’ll be able to fine tune things like your hair and eyebrow color, more accurately adjust your skin tone, add makeup and face paint, and otherwise make your VR persona better reflect how you see yourself IRL.

Free-Form Locomotion in Horizon Home

Historically in Horizon Home, you’ve only been able to move between predefined hotspots. This can be useful when you’re new to VR and getting used to the headset, but the more VR apps and games you experience, the more noticeable the lack of free locomotion in Home becomes. Besides, who doesn’t want to explore every nook and cranny of their Home environment? 🕵️

Whether you’re hanging out solo or watching Meta Quest TV content with friends, now you can freely teleport throughout your Home space—within reason. You can’t teleport through walls, furniture, or virtual objects like your Avatar Mirror. And you can’t teleport too close to another person’s avatar, so no one invades anyone else’s personal space.

To enable free-form locomotion, press the joystick forward on either controller. An arch will appear and show where you’re currently aiming. If the arch is red, that means you can’t teleport to the selected location. When the arch turns white, you’re good to go.

While trying free-form locomotion, go ahead and customize your skybox and explore its depths too.

Check out our v57 Release Notes for a more comprehensive look at all the changes. We’ll see you next time for a new Meta Quest software update.
