Set up your boundary for Meta Quest
Guardian is a built-in safety feature that lets you set up boundaries in VR that appear when you get too close to the edge of your playing area.
Boundary modes
When setting up a boundary, you can choose from these modes:
- Stationary: For using your headset while sitting or standing in place. Stationary mode creates a default boundary area of 1 metre by 1 metre (3 feet by 3 feet) centred on yourself.
- Roomscale: For using your headset while moving around inside your playing area. Roomscale allows you to draw your boundaries in your physical space using your Touch controller. We recommend a safe and unobstructed space measuring at least 2 by 2 metres (6.5 by 6.5 feet).
Adjust your boundary
To adjust your boundary modes or redraw your boundary:
- Press
Meta button or
Oculus button on your right controller to open the Navigator.
- Select
Quick controls.
- Select
Settings, then select
Environment setup.
- Select Boundary, then select Adjust boundary.
- From here, you can draw a roomscale boundary or adjust your stationary boundary.
Manage boundary settings
To manage boundary history:
- Press
Meta button or
Oculus button on your right controller to open the Navigator.
- Select
Quick controls.
- Select
Settings, then select
Environment setup.
- Select Boundary.
- From here, you can clear your previous boundary or create a new one.
You can manage these settings:
- Adjust boundary: This puts you back into the boundary setup like you did when you first set up your headset.
- Set floor level: Allows you to adjust the floor level of your boundary.
- Boundary colour: Changes the colour of your boundary.
- Double-tap for Pass-through: Allows you to double-tap the side of your headset to switch to and from Pass-through mode.
- Clear boundary history: Clears all boundary anchors on device and the cloud for the current account. This action does not clear scenes, tracking or maps.
- Glanceable boundary: When enabled, you can look down at an angle while on Meta Quest to quickly see where you are in your playspace.
- Boundary sensitivity: Adjust how granularly you want to set your boundary alerts. Choose from two options:
- Simple: You'll adjust the sensitivity of all of your boundaries collectively with a single slider. Lower sensitivity generally means that you won't be alerted until you get closer to your boundaries.
- Advanced: Adjust sensitivity at a more granular level using these settings:
- Headset distance sensitivity: Lowering your distance sensitivity means that you won't be alerted until you're closer to the edge of the boundary.
- Controller distance sensitivity: Lowering your distance sensitivity means that you won't be alerted until you're closer to the edge of the boundary.
- Headset speed sensitivity: Lowering your speed sensitivity means that you'll be alerted less when making fast movements near a boundary edge.
- Controller speed sensitivity: Lowering your speed sensitivity means that you'll be alerted less when making fast movements near a boundary edge.

Boundary logic
Boundary is designed to minimise the amount of time setting it up. It does this by automatically creating a Stationary boundary as you enter your VR experiences. If you ever change your boundary to a Roomscale boundary, we'll save that preference: one for your VR home and a separate preference for your VR apps. This feature exists so that you can have flexibility between their VR apps and VR home boundaries. Floor height will be set every time the boundary is autocreated.
There is a boundary preference (Roomscale or Stationary) when you re-enter immersive Home or immersive apps. This preference can change or be updated in Quick settings or Settings in Boundary setup.
The boundary preferences include:
- VR home: Default preference is Stationary boundary.
- VR apps: The first time that you enter an immersive app, you will be prompted to create a boundary (Stationary or Roomscale).
What if I can't play a game because I am in a Stationary boundary?
To switch from a stationary boundary to roomscale and increase your playing area, follow these steps within the app:
- Press
Meta button or
Oculus button on your right controller to open the Navigator.
- Select
Quick controls.
- Select Boundary, then select Switch to Roomscale.
- From here, you can draw a Roomscale boundary or adjust your Stationary boundary.
Your boundary preference does not change if:
- You are not within the app where you want to change your app boundary preference.
- You toggle on Pass-through. This does not affect boundaries in VR homes or VR apps.
