Use your computer in VR in Meta Horizon Workrooms

You may have recently updated Remote Desktop and lost connection between the app and your Meta Quest headset.

To fix this issue, in Remote Desktop, you will be prompted to download a software update. You can also download the latest version here:

  • Download Remote Desktop for macOS
  • Download Remote Desktop for Windows

After installing this version, you will need to re-authenticate your account and then you'll be able to reconnect Meta Quest Remote Desktop with your Meta Quest device.

To use your computer in VR in Workrooms, you'll need to first download and install Remote Desktop for macOS (Big Sur, Catalina and Monterey) or Windows (10 and 11). Remote Desktop lets you pair your computer to your Meta Quest headset, streaming what is on your computer screen into VR.

You'll be prompted to download Remote Desktop after you have created your Workrooms account. You can also download it from Settings in the Workrooms web app, or from the links below:

  • Download Remote Desktop for macOS.
  • Download Remote Desktop for Windows.

To use your computer in VR with Workrooms:

  1. From your computer, open Remote Desktop and log in with your Workrooms account.
    • Remote Desktop requires the microphone, screen recording and accessibility permissions on macOS in order to stream audio from your computer to the headset in VR.
  2. From your Meta Quest headset, open the Workrooms app.
  3. Once you're in Workrooms, select Computer from the desk menu.
  4. Hover over your computer and select Connect. This will open a Remote Desktop streaming request on your computer.
  5. From your computer, press Enter on your keyboard or click Confirm on the Remote Desktop streaming request.

Audio known issues

Windows:

  • Some Windows computers may have issues with volume controls when using Remote Desktop. To fix this, switch your computer's main audio output device to the Meta Quest virtual audio device speakers. If that doesn't work, reduce the volume on your computer and increase the volume on your headset.
  • Plugging in or unplugging an audio device while using Remote Desktop may cause issues.

MacOS:

  • Remote Desktop installs a virtual audio device to enable streaming audio from your computer to your headset. Removing Remote Desktop by dragging the application to the recycle bin will not uninstall the virtual audio device. Please run the uninstaller to completely uninstall Remote Desktop.
  • Plugging in or unplugging an audio device while using Remote Desktop may cause issues.

Troubleshooting lag or latency

If you're experiencing lag or latency issues when using Remote Desktop, here are some tips for improving performance:

  • Make sure that your headset and computer are on the same network.
  • Connect your headset to Wi-Fi via 5 GHz band, if available.
  • Have your router in the same room as your headset or in line of sight, and at least 1 metre (3 feet) off the ground.
  • Ensure that your router's software is up to date.
  • Check your computer's firewall settings.
  • Closing other apps or programs that are using your network or streaming may improve performance.
  • If you're still experiencing issues, try rebooting your router.
  • If you're consistently experiencing low bandwidth, contact your ISP.
