Troubleshooting object drift during mixed reality experiences

Mixed reality experiences use passthrough to blend virtual objects and the real world. You are asked to set up your space when you launch one of these experiences for the first time.

Where mixed reality apps or games involve positioning virtual objects in your physical space, spatial anchors keep the objects in place and persist their location between sessions. If you notice that the objects you have placed are drifting over time, or appear unstable, there are things that you can do to improve your experience:

Clear physical space history

Clearing your physical space history will usually resolve issues with object/anchor drift:

  1. Press Meta button or Oculus button on your right Touch controller to open the universal menu.
  2. Select the clock on the left-hand side of the universal menu to open Quick settings.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Privacy and safety.
  5. Select Device permissions.
  6. Next to Clear physical space history, select Clear.

Note that your physical space history includes boundaries, as well as spaces and spatial anchors:

  • The next time you launch an MR experience, you will be asked to set up your space.
  • Objects placed in your environment as part of an MR experience will need to be replaced.
  • The next time that you use an immersive app or enter immersive home, you will be asked to create a new roomscale or stationary boundary.

Other tips

If clearing your physical space history doesn't improve object drift, there may be environmental factors causing issues:

  • Reduce the size of your playspace. Object drift is more common when moving with your headset over large areas, such as an entire home or office.
  • Ensure that your area is well lit, with enough light to clearly see, but not direct sunlight.
  • Minimise reflective surfaces such as mirrors, glass or polished marble.
  • Ensure that the tracking cameras on your headset are clean following our recommended maintenance and care guidelines.
