Great past, flawed present Rec Room used to be hailed as the best VR social game. Unfortunately it's really falling behind in recent times. All other games are currently surpassing it in popularity. VRchat. Animal Company. Gorilla Tag. It's really unfortunate.
I'm not going to pretend the game isn't fun, it can be. The dev made rooms and content is still there, like the "Quests" or classic "Paintball" or even the battle royale knock off, "Rec Royale". There is at minimum 100~ hours of quality, free content available here.
Unfortunately, the platform is quickly spiring out of control below them due to a lot of factors. Above them being the fact that people who make UGC rooms have gamed the platform to pump out low effort rooms for an easy paycheck targeting users (mainly younger demographics) on console and mobile. This is to the detriment of anyone seeking a quality, user made room to sink your teeth into.
They've sunk a lot of time into a lot of UGC features and you still can not replicate the quality of the content the developers officially released through 2016, 2017, and 2018. This was the promise behind the UGC tools and yet there isn't any specific game people come to Rec Room to play. I sure don't have any in mind.
I haven't even gotten into the mess that is their botched microtransactions and appropriating user created lore behind paywalls, or their recent layoffs, or a lot of the original community leaving due to old systems being discontinued or falling into disarray. It's a cycle.
So again... yes, the game is fun... if you just stick to the dev made rooms (called RROs or Rec Room Originals), maybe find the few UGC rooms that are worth playing and have an active player population, avoid the slop pushed by grifters, and try to make the best of what Rec Room is right now.
I am personally not actively playing the game right now, but I hope they can turn things around. It would be nice to praise this game as the best social VR title once more, but that is up to them.
