How Muse works with files and apps in your Mac
How your agent can take actions on local files and some apps through the Mac app
When you use the Muse app on your Mac, your agent can work across your computer to find, organize, and manage the files you ask it to work with (Example: "Pull the three invoices from last month into one folder"). Your agent can also read info from the apps on your computer like iMessage, Notes, Reminders, Email, Calendar (examples: "Summarize my messages from the week.")
How it works
To let your agent use your computer, you'll be asked to grant Muse permissions that are set and controlled by macOS, not by Meta:
- Full Disk Access, so your agent can find, read or update files. This permission covers all the files on your Mac, but your agent only uses the files and app information you ask it to work with.
- Automation, so your agent can perform actions on apps that store information locally, like send messages or delete notes.
- Notifications, so your agent can tell you when a task it was working on is done.
You stay in control while it works
Before your agent takes an important action like sending an email or making a purchase, it asks you to confirm first. When your agent deletes a file, it moves it to your Trash, where you can restore it. Learn more.
Apps that keep your information on your Mac
Some apps store your information on your Mac locally rather than only online, for example your messages, notes and mail. Your agent reads these from your Mac directly.
You'll see some of these apps that store information locally listed during setup. For each one, you choose:
- Off: your agent can't use the information that app keeps on your Mac.
- Read only: your agent can read that information when you ask it something, but can't do anything in the app.
- Read and interact: your agent can read that information and take actions in the app, like sending a message.
You can also choose to turn off Muse access to these apps later in Settings.
Apps you have installed aren't controlled by Meta. Meta doesn't review these apps or how they use your information. They'll use any information shared with them in accordance with their own terms and privacy policies. Review the apps Muse can use carefully, as well as each privacy policy.
How we use info we collect
Your interactions with Muse can also include information from the apps and services Muse uses to perform tasks for you, including screenshots of your screen. You decide whether we can use your interactions with Muse to develop and improve our AI models, as described in the Muse Privacy Policy. You can change it at any time using the toggle in Settings under Data controls.
How to manage access
- Open Settings, then click File System Access to turn off some of the apps that keep your information on your Mac.
- To turn off a single capability, access to your files, or notifications, open your Mac's System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and remove Muse's permission for Full Disk Access, Automation, or Notifications.
- To turn off computer use entirely, remove these permissions in System Settings.
Things to keep in mind
- Your agent may be inaccurate or take unexpected actions. Monitor its actions carefully and intervene as needed.
- Computer use gives your agent broad reach across your Mac, so only grant access you're comfortable with.
