Start a conversation with Meta AI
You can start a conversation with the Meta AI assistant on the Meta AI app. Meta AI can generate responses to any questions, give you details on a photo or generate images or animations for you, help edit your writing, provide coding assistance and more based on your prompt.
You can talk to Meta AI using your voice or you can type in a prompt. Voice conversations with Meta AI are currently only available in English. You’ll need to allow the Meta AI app access to your microphone to speak with Meta AI.
To start a conversation with Meta AI:
- On the Meta AI app, tap
Chat on the bottom.
- If you’ve given the Meta AI app access to your microphone and have Start with voice enabled, you’ll begin a voice conversation with Meta AI when you tap
Chat. You can tap
Microphone to mute or
Stop to end the voice conversation. Learn more about how to toggle the Start with voice setting in Meta AI.
- Tap Ask Anything... and type in your prompt, or tap
Talk and begin a voice conversation.
- Meta AI will generate a response for you.
If you're having a voice conversation with Meta AI, you can continue talking to Meta AI in the background while you use other apps on your device. When the Meta AI app is in the background, your device will show that the microphone is in use. Tap X or End on the voice conversation to end it. Depending on your device's manufacturer your steps and what you see may differ.
You can also ask Meta AI questions about a photo by tapping , then tapping
Camera to take a picture or
Photo library to upload a photo, then typing in or speaking your prompt. (Example: “What breed of cat is this?” or “Where can I find this hat?”)

- An AI’s response may be inaccurate or inappropriate and should not be used to make important decisions.
- Meta uses your interactions with AIs to improve AI at Meta. If the AIs cannot answer your query, Meta shares the messages you send to AI and general information, like your region, with select partners so you can get better results. Visit our Meta AI Terms of Service to learn more.
- Meta AI uses your location information to give you more relevant responses. Your location information is based on things like the settings you've chosen on your device, or your activity across our products. Learn more about how to manage your location in the Privacy Center.
- Other information from your profile such as your age and gender, and interests based on your activity across our products, such as the types of content, including ads, you view or interact with and how you interact with it, will be used to help personalize your interactions with AI. - Depending on your prompt, the content generated may go against our Community Standards or Terms of Service of Meta's platforms. Sharing AI-generated content on our platforms that go against these standards will be treated the same as sharing other content that go against our standards. If you share generated content that goes against our standards, your content may be removed and your account may be restricted or disabled. - Depending on your region, your interactions with AI products can be used to personalize content and ads.
- If you have a voice conversation with Meta AI, your voice recording is initially available in your history temporarily. Your text transcript will remain available in your history.
