This article is only applicable to orders shipped to California.

Meta Store orders that ship to California and include a product with a built-in battery will be charged a covered battery-embedded (CBE) recycling fee. This fee is required by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). It helps fund the safe recycling of electronic products with batteries.

By law, Meta must collect these CBE fees on qualifying orders. Meta doesn't determine the fee rates or receive any revenue from them. This fee is separate from the price of your product.

Where the fee appears

The CBE fee, if applicable, will be included in your estimated taxes at checkout. Your email receipt shows this fee as a separate line item.

Products this fee applies to

This fee applies to products and accessories with a non-removable battery, such as:

  • Meta Quest headsets
  • Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses
  • Accessories with built-in batteries

This fee applies to both new and refurbished products.

How the fee is calculated

The CBE fee is a percentage of the retail price of each product, up to a set maximum per item. CalRecycle sets the rate, which may change each year. Visit California's Department of Tax and Fee Administration website for current rates.

Refunds

If you return a product and get a full refund, the CBE fee for that product is also refunded.

Note: This fee doesn't apply to warranty replacements that are shipped after you return your original device. However, if we ship you a replacement device before you return your original device, you need to send the original back within 30 days. Otherwise, you'll be charged a CBE fee for the replacement device.
