Meta's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.
To do this we need to understand how people connect and use our products.
Meta’s user experience research teams regularly speak to people about Meta products and how they connect with others.
We conduct user experience research studies to speak to both people who use our products and those who don't. Studies can be done onsite at one of our offices or research labs around the world, or remotely from the comfort of your home. The insights we gather are shared with the teams who build our products.
We conduct user experience research in a variety of ways:
Onsite Studies
We may invite you to one of our Meta offices or research labs to get your feedback on how you use Meta products.
Surveys
We conduct email surveys about specific products or topics. Email surveys typically take between five to ten minutes to complete. You may also receive surveys in-app, while you are using Meta products.
We also send surveys to potential participants to see if you are the right fit for an upcoming study. Unfortunately not everyone who fills out the survey will be selected to take part in the study. If you are selected, you will receive more information about the study details.
Telephone or Video Conference Interviews
We conduct one-on-one phone and video interviews to gain insights about our products.
In-Home or Field Research Studies
We may arrange to visit you in your home, office, or place of business to learn more about how you interact with Meta products in your daily life.
You can learn more about Meta user experience research by reviewing the answers to the questions below or by visiting our research page.
How does Meta invite people to participate in a research study?
You will receive an email invitation from an address that ends in facebookmail.com or metamail.com (including facebook-research.facebookmail.com, support@frl-research.facebookmail.com and research.metamail.com). To find out more about verifying the legitimacy of emails from Meta, visit this link to the help center for more information.
Meta also seeks survey respondents via on and off-platform outreach.
How does Meta select people for research studies?
We often want to speak to people who have used certain Meta products and features to learn more about their experiences. We use an initial screening survey - occasionally sent via a third-party survey tool such as Qualtrics - to determine if you meet the criteria for a given study.
Completing a survey does not guarantee you will be asked to participate in a user experience research study. Our research participant recruiters will review your responses and if you are a fit for the study, someone will reach out to you directly via phone or email to schedule a session with you.
What will I be doing during a user experience research study?
The invitation you receive will describe the type of research you will be asked to participate in. Our research participant recruiters are also able to answer any questions you may have.
Our team conducts the following types of research studies:
In-person
Participants come to a Meta office or research facility, or Meta research teams visit participants in their home, office or place of business for a one-on-one interview or focus group.
Remote research study
Participants will speak directly to a researcher over the telephone or through a video conference call.
Online survey
Participants are sent a link to a short online survey to be completed by a specific date.
Diary study
Participants are asked to complete a set of activities or homework assignments over the course of a few days or weeks.
Where do research studies take place?
It is important to understand how people use our products all over the world. To achieve this we conduct user experience research everywhere - from our headquarters in Menlo Park, CA to our New York, Seattle, and London offices, and everywhere in-between. We also do research studies remotely via phone, video conference and email surveys.
Research invitations will specify the location of the study, so you can determine if you are able to participate, prior to committing.
What's in it for me?
As a thank you for your time, Meta compensates participants who participate in one of our research studies. You will be notified of the compensation amount in the study invitation and during scheduling. Compensation varies depending on the study, and sent from a third party vendor.
