Teen Privacy and Safety Settings
Meta is committed to providing young people with safer and more private experiences. We have dedicated teams focused on youth safety, and we work closely with experts to inform the features we develop. Here are some of the default settings and additional tools for teens across our apps. Age requirements may vary by country.
Facebook teen privacy and safety settings
Default Facebook Settings
- Location Sharing: Location sharing is off for minors by default. When either an adult or minor turns on location sharing, we include a consistent indicator as a reminder that they're sharing their location.
- Private Settings: Everyone who is under the age of 16 (or under 18 in certain countries) will be defaulted into more private settings when they join Facebook, including:
- Who can see their friends list.
- Who can see the people, Pages and lists they follow.
- Who can see posts they’re tagged in on their profile.
- Reviewing posts they’re tagged in before the post appears on their profile.
- Who is allowed to comment on their public posts.
- We protect certain information, such as minors' contact info, school and birthday, from appearing in search to a public audience.
Additional Facebook Tools
Time Management
- Break Reminders: Teens will see a notification when they’ve spent 20 minutes on Facebook, prompting them to take a break from the app and set daily time limits. It is designed to support teens' meaningful and intentional usage of Facebooking and encourage them to take regular breaks.
In-app Resources
- We provide minors with specific education about what it means to post publicly. Additionally, we take steps to remind minors that they should only accept friend requests from people they know.

- We restrict adults over 18 from starting private chats with teens they're not connected to on Instagram and Messenger.
