How to factory reset your Meta Quest
If your Meta Quest headset has a problem you can't fix any other way, a factory reset returns the headset to its original settings. You can factory reset your Meta Quest from the headset itself, from the Meta Horizon app on your phone, or remotely from your Meta Account if the headset is lost or stolen. A factory reset is irreversible and erases all account information, downloaded games and content from the headset.

Things to know before you factory reset your Meta Quest
A factory reset is a last resort method for solving Meta Quest headset issues. Before you factory reset your headset, try:
- Update your headset with the software update tool. This tool lets you update your headset's software, even when the headset itself is unresponsive.
- Hard reboot your headset by holding down the power button for 30 seconds, until you hear the headset turn back on.
If your Meta Quest headset is still having problems, you can try a factory reset. Before you do:
- A factory reset is irreversible and will remove all account information, downloaded games and content from your Meta Quest.
- A factory reset won't remove content you've purchased or downloaded from your account.
- Turn on cloud backup to save your Meta Quest headset's app data and settings before you erase it.
- Ensure that your Meta Quest headset has at least 50% battery life before you factory reset it.
Factory reset your Meta Quest in person or remotely
To factory reset your Meta Quest with the buttons on the headset itself:
- Turn off your headset.
- Hold down the power and volume (-) buttons at the same time until the boot screen loads. If the boot screen doesn't load, charge your headset and try again.
- Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Factory reset and press the power button.
- Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.
To factory reset your Meta Quest headset using the Meta Horizon app on your phone, your headset must be paired to the app. If your headset isn't paired to the Meta Horizon app, factory reset it using the buttons on the headset instead.
To factory reset your Meta Quest with the Meta Horizon app on your phone:
- On your phone, open the Meta Horizon app.
- Tap
Menu at the top of your Horizon Feed.
- Tap Devices, then select the headset you want to factory reset. If your headset isn't listed, it isn't paired to the Meta Horizon app, so factory reset it with the buttons on the headset instead.
- Tap Headset settings, then tap Advanced settings.
- Tap Factory Reset.
- Tap Reset.
With your Meta Account, you can factory reset your Meta Quest remotely, even if you don't have the headset with you. If your Meta Quest headset is lost permanently or was stolen, removing the data from it can help protect your account and personal information.
To remotely factory reset a lost or stolen Meta Quest with your Meta Account:
- On a computer or mobile phone, go to https://auth.meta.com/settings/my/devices/.
- Choose your headset from the list of devices. If your headset isn't listed, it may not be linked to the Meta Account you're signed in to, so check that you're using the correct account.
- Select Delete device data or Factory reset. These are two labels for the same action, and which one you see depends on your headset's software version. If you don't see either option, your headset's software version may not support remote factory reset.
- Complete the verification steps to confirm your identity.
- Once the factory reset is complete, your headset will disappear from the list of devices.
Your Meta Quest headset will be factory reset the next time it connects to the internet. Until then, the headset keeps your data, so request the remote factory reset as soon as you know the headset is lost or stolen.
