What happens to a child’s Meta account when they turn 13
When children turn 13 (age may vary by region), they’ll be prompted to start managing their own Meta account. They’ll have 30 days after their birthday to review what will change when they start managing their own account and agree to the Meta Terms of Service to continue using their Meta Quest.
Teens who start managing their accounts will automatically be enrolled in parental supervision. Teens and their parents or guardians have the option to remove supervision at any time.
When a teen starts managing their own account:
- They’ll use their own email and password to log in.
- They’ll be in charge of their own account and privacy settings, like setting their password.
- They’ll start managing their own follow requests if they weren’t managing them already.
- They’ll no longer need someone to be an approved contact before they can chat with, call, and invite or join them in an app or destination. Parents can use the parent dashboard to see the usernames of people their teen is connected to.
- Their Meta Horizon profile will stay private by default.
Teens can find information on how they can review privacy settings and learn more about safeguards in the Teen Privacy Center.
Differences in data use
By default, Meta Horizon will use information such as age, chosen language, general location, and people a child is connected with so that we can provide them with additional product functionalities and safe, age-appropriate experiences, such as enabling them to invite people to specific apps and worlds and placing them in apps and worlds with people they know and/or contacts their parent has approved.
A child’s approved contacts, followers, and those they follow may appear higher in their search results.
Parents or guardians can choose to allow Meta to use other types of data about how their child uses Meta Horizon to further tailor these experiences, so they’ll see more of what’s interesting and relevant to them.
When children turn 13 (age may vary by region) and start managing their own account, these other types of data will be enabled for personalization automatically, in line with the Meta Privacy Policy.
