Set up a tracked keyboard for Meta Quest
Meta Quest supports keyboards in two different ways:
- Via Bluetooth connection, allowing you to use a keyboard to type directly into Meta Quest applications and home.
- Via a keyboard connected to a device you are streaming content from. For example, using the Meta Quest Remote Desktop app to use your computer in VR.
In both scenarios, your keyboard can be tracked by your headset. This lets you see your keyboard and hands in Passthrough, even when you are in an immersive environment. Tracking works with most common types of keyboard, but ergonomic or split keyboards are not supported.
Connecting via Bluetooth
Keyboards that are connected directly to the headset via Bluetooth can be used in the VR home environment and applications that support Bluetooth keyboards. When you use the keyboard in an immersive environment, you’ll see your keyboard and hands in a Passthrough window that is tracked to the keyboard’s location.
To connect a bluetooth keyboard to your Meta Quest:
- Press
Meta button /
Oculus button on your controller to open the universal menu.
- Select the clock on the left side of the universal menu to open Quick settings.
- Select
Settings.
- Select
Devices.
- Select
Keyboard
- From here, if you want to see your keyboard in a Passthrough window, select the toggle next to Show my keyboard.
- Select Bluetooth settings and put your keyboard in pairing mode.
- Select your keyboard from the list of available Bluetooth devices.
- When your keyboard finishes connecting, you should now be able to see it and use it from inside your headset.
Once you have connected a keyboard, you'll see a prompt asking if you want to see your keyboard in VR whenever you turn your headset on and the keyboard is in range.
Remote keyboards
Not all keyboards need to be connected directly to your Meta Quest headset. Instead they might be connected to a computer or device which is streaming content to your Meta Quest headset. For example, using the Meta Quest Remote Desktop app.
Keyboards being used in this way are still tracked and you will still be able to see your keyboard through a Passthrough window when in an immersive environment. As above, to turn on keyboard tracking:
- Press
Meta button /
Oculus button on your controller to open the universal menu.
- Select the clock on the left side of the universal menu to open Quick settings.
- Select
Settings.
- Select
Devices.
- Select
Keyboard.
- Select the toggle next to Show my keyboard.
Your keyboard will now be tracked in your VR home environment, as well as in applications that support keyboard tracking.
