For parents

Supervision is a set of tools and insights you can use to help support your teen on Meta Horizon. Both you and your teen must agree to supervision, and either of you can remove it at any time. This page explains what you can and can't see or do when supervising your teen.

How supervision is set up

Your teen manages their own Meta Horizon profile. Supervision is optional and must be set up by you or your teen through Family Center.

For information about parent-managed profiles for children aged 10 to 12, visit Manage your child's Meta Horizon profile.

Eligibility

  • Your teen must be between 13 and 17 years old
  • You must be 18 or older
  • Both you and your teen must agree to supervision

Core features

  • Time management: You can see how much time your teen spends in apps and Worlds. You can set daily time limits and scheduled breaks.
  • App and content management: You can see which apps your teen uses, their purchases, downloads and gifts. You can also block or allow their access to specific apps, purchases and features.
  • App access: By default, your teen is blocked from downloading or purchasing apps rated above their age in the Meta Horizon Store. You can allow individual apps on a case-by-case basis. You can also change this setting to allow age-restricted apps without per-request approval. If you turn this setting off, you will need to block any apps manually.
  • Social connections: You can see who your teen follows and who follows them, including any Meta AI features they interact with.
  • Social features: You can block or allow your teen's access to social features like Horizon chats, calling features, and voice chat in Worlds. Blocking social features does not prevent access to social features within other apps.
  • Casting: You can watch your teen's Meta Quest experience in real time by casting to a mobile device.
  • Meta Quest Link: Link and Air Link allow your teen's Meta Quest headset to access additional apps by connecting the headset to a computer through a Link cable or wirelessly. You can block or allow this feature. When blocked, your teen will need to request permission before they can connect their headset to a PC.
  • Developer mode: You can block or allow your teen's access to developer mode. Developer mode is for building and testing apps. It allows your teen to load and use apps from a connected device or computer. These apps may not be available in the Meta Horizon Store.
  • Notifications: You can adjust your notification settings and how they appear on your phone or in headset. Changes to your notifications will not affect your teen's notifications. Your teen will be able to see which notifications you have turned on. To receive notifications, use Family Center from the Meta Horizon app. The web version of Family Center does not support notifications.

Worlds-specific features

If your teen uses Worlds, you can also:

  • See, change, or lock their voice channel or personal boundary settings. Your teen will be notified if you change these settings.
  • Lock a setting so your teen must send a request to make it less restrictive. They can always change it to be more restrictive on their own.
  • Set time limits or scheduled breaks specifically for Worlds.
  • Block your teen from using specific worlds.

What you can't see or do

  • Read your teen's private messages
  • Change your teen's avatar or username
  • Delete their profile or reset their password

Regional features

In some regions, you may have additional capabilities as required by local law, such as the ability to download your teen's profile information or delete their profile.

Removing supervision

  • When your teen turns 18

Supervision is automatically removed when your teen turns 18 according to the birthday on their profile. Meta will send a reminder to you and your teen as they approach their 18th birthday.

  • Removing supervision early

You or your teen can choose to remove supervision at any time from the Family Center settings. The other person will be notified. If your teen removes supervision before they're 18, they have 24 hours to change their mind and restore it. During this time, you can also confirm the removal to complete it right away. If the 24-hour window passes without your teen restoring supervision, it will be removed. Once removed, you will need to set up supervision again if needed.
