How to update the software on your Meta Quest
Your Meta Quest headset updates its software automatically when it’s charged, turned on and connected to Wi-Fi. You can also check for an update yourself, and choose whether your headset powers itself on to install updates.
How to check for software updates on your Meta Quest
To check for software updates:
- Press
Meta button or
Oculus button on your right controller to open the Navigator.
- Select
Quick controls.
- Select
Settings.
- Select
General, then select
Software update.
From the Software update screen, you can check your current software version. If a new version is available, a button to download the update will appear.
How your Meta Quest updates automatically
When there is a new software release, your Meta Quest headset will update automatically when connected to Wi-Fi and turned on. To ensure your software updates automatically:
- Charge your headset.
- Keep your headset turned on.
- Keep your headset connected to Wi-Fi.
- Leave your headset on a flat surface without moving it or blocking the inside sensor for an extended period of time.
Note: Your headset will not update automatically while turned off or sleeping.
How to turn automatic updates on or off on your Meta Quest
With Automatically power headset to update enabled, your headset will briefly power on to apply available updates and power off when updates are complete. You may hear your headset’s fans during this process. Your microphone and cameras will always remain off until you put your headset on and press the power button.
Note: When your device powers on or automatically updates, its cameras and microphones can receive power but cannot collect or record any data.
The first time you set up your headset, or after a factory reset, Automatically power headset to update will appear on the Power off menu and will be turned on by default. You can turn it off at this time, or you can turn it off later from Settings.
To turn on automatic updates for your Meta Quest:

- Select
- Select the toggle next to Automatically power headset to update to turn this feature on or off.
Note: You can't use Automatically power headset to update if you have a lock PIN set. When a lock PIN is set, your headset can't be unlocked unless you enter the PIN.
If you can’t update your Meta Quest from the headset
If you’re unable to update from your headset, you can also use the software update tool on a computer or phone.
