Meta Horizon Worlds is committed to maintaining a respectful and enjoyable environment for all users. As part of our ongoing effort, we've introduced the community moderator role in public worlds. This article outlines the responsibilities, capabilities, and best practices associated with the moderator role.

You know the worlds you spend time in better than anyone else. With the ability to moderate in real-time, you can intervene in situations, helping ensure the space you enjoy spending time in remains a positive environment. It's about creating a community where respect and positive interactions are the norm. To help with this, community moderators will be able to:

Mute or Unmute: If someone’s causing trouble, you can mute them for 15 minutes. You can also unmute them when things cool down.
Warn: If someone’s causing trouble, they can send a private warning message to a user to inform them that they are not following world norms.
Remove: If muting doesn’t address the disruption, you can remove people from the world session to keep the peace.

Before You Act:

Try to Talk First: Consider chatting with the person causing trouble. It’s important to give them a chance to correct their behavior. You’ll be asked to confirm that you’ve tried talking to them before muting, warning, or removing them.
Select a Reason: To help us learn more about why you took any action against someone, you’ll be asked to choose a reason for your action from a list. This reason will be shared with the disruptor. This helps Meta and the disruptive user understand what kind of behavior led to a moderator intervening.

Notifications:

People muted or removed by you: They’ll get a message explaining why they were muted or removed to help them avoid these actions from being taken in the future.

Best Practices:

Be Fair and Respectful: Treat everyone equally and respectfully.
Talk First: Let people know what they should stop doing before muting or removing them. Sometimes a friendly word is all it takes.
Effective Communication: When talking to others, make sure to provide clear explanations for any action you want to take.
Assume positive intent: To create a welcoming environment, assume positive intent and seek to learn more about others’ actions.
If you see something, say something: Please report any questionable behavior to Meta (Learn More) and always mention the reporting option to anyone you assist within the world. Your help should not be considered an alternative to reporting behavior that violates Meta’s Code of Conduct for Virtual Experiences to Meta.

Example Scenarios:

Inappropriate Language: Someone is using inappropriate language. The community moderator should first issue a verbal warning. If the behavior continues, they can mute the user for 15 minutes, after confirming the action and selecting an appropriate reason.
Disruptive Behavior: If someone is disrupting conversations by yelling or shouting, the moderator should initially warn the user. If the disruption persists, the moderator can mute or remove the user, ensuring the reason for action is clear and communicated to all affected parties.
Underage User: In cases where a user is suspected of being underage, the community moderator should immediately file a user report for Meta to investigate. You can also remove the user.
Bullying: Sometimes people's behavior may cross a line. If you believe someone is bullying another player, submit a report to Meta so we can investigate.

By adopting these practices, community moderators play a crucial role in shaping a positive, respectful, and engaging space for everyone to enjoy.

Apply or be invited by a world creator to be a community moderator
