We continue to make progress on making Marketplace a safer and more responsible place to transact. However, scams can still affect both buyers and sellers on Marketplace. To stay safe, it's essential to understand what scams are and how to identify them when buying or selling.

Reporting suspicious activities

Together, we can make Marketplace safe and fair. If you encounter anything suspicious, whether you're buying or selling, you can report it to us. Report the buyer, the seller, or the items listed for sale. If you want to report something but you don't have an account or can't see the content, you can ask a friend to help you.

Overpayment or refunds

Buyers may request refunds without actually paying. Always check your account to confirm payment, even if they send you a screenshot showing the transaction. If you're ever unsure, reach out to your payment app's support team directly for help.

Off-platform contacts

Buyers or sellers requesting you contact them by phone or email, especially early on in your conversation, may have ill intent. Off-platform scams are most common in the vehicle, rental and home goods categories.

Phishing of sensitive information

Sellers can use off-platform links to trick you into sharing your credit card or banking information. You should never share these under any circumstance. Links that require you to log in with personal information or passwords are an immediate red flag and can put your sensitive information at risk.

Be cautious of listings that are significantly underpriced compared to market value. Be wary of sellers who try to rush you into making a decision or are unclear about an item's history. These red flags can indicate a potential scam.
