Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is still lurking in the shadows, but it’s creeping closer and closer with each passing day. Today, publisher Vertigo Games and developer Maze Theory are excited to reveal that the latest entry in the iconic immersive sim meets stealth action franchise will be releasing for the Meta Quest platform on December 4.

We’ve got a first-ever look at the game running natively on Quest as well, right here:

To learn more about Thief VR and what’s in store for players, you can read our original Q&A interview from a few months ago here. Or, scroll down to see our latest quick interview where we chatted with Nick Witsel, Principal Designer at Vertigo Games, and Steven Gallagher, Creative Director at Eidos-Montréal, the same studio that worked on 2014’s Thief, as well as Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

We've chatted a lot about this game carrying on the Thief legacy and the kinds of weapons players will have access to, but what about the game world itself. What sort of environments will players explore?

Nick Witsel:Thief VR takes place in the dark dystopian setting known as The City, a place mixing medieval architecture with steampunk and fantasy elements. The game’s environments mainly feature these grand manors and castles with a variety of secrets and clever ways to infiltrate them. There is also the Clocktower, Magpie’s hideout, which acts as the game’s central hub from which you select missions.

On a related note, what types of missions will there be? Is there a healthy mixture of mechanics in terms of exploration, stealth, ranged combat, melee combat, etc?

NW: Missions typically involve one primary objective where something has to be stolen, supported by a variety of optional side objectives supporting you in your thefts. This involves infiltrating a heavy guarded compound. The front entrance is rarely the smart way in, and you’ll have to explore to figure out different routes while deciding how to deal with the patrols in between.

Climbing, using rope arrows, picking locks and knocking out guards while dragging their unconscious bodies into the darkness are an example of the tools at your disposal. Combat is always the result of being spotted, and you’ll have to think and act fast to survive. While you can engage, this comes with risk. Your blackjack can be used to defend and parry certain blows, but this requires precise timing and can easily lead to death. You can also use your arrows to injure or even kill guards. But this requires strong accuracy while kills also negatively impact your end-of-level score.

What are some of the advantages the Quest version of the game has? What does the platform empower you to do?

NW: The tetherless experience of the Quest assists greatly in helping you forget where you are and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the world of Thief and The City.

It's been a while since we last had a new Thief game. Where in the series does this take place in the timeline and what's the state of the world like leading up to the new game?

Steven Gallagher:Legacy of Shadow takes place roughly halfway between the original Thief trilogy and Thief (2014), set around 200 years after the fall of House Bresling and Garrett’s defeat of the Trickster and Karras in the original trilogy. The factions of the Hammerites and Pagans are being inexorably pushed underground beneath the grinding wheels of progress, slowly losing their form and influence while the Keepers remain hidden in plain sight in the form of solitary advisors that position themselves close to those they need. This is the time when House Northcrest first gains power, so the City’s new ruler is Baron Ulysses Northcrest, first of his line and the iron fist that heralds the start of the Northcrest’s 200-year obsession with brutal industrialization and esoteric science. Against this backdrop, a talented thief by the name of Magpie ends up stealing a mysterious artefact, a mechanical eye that seems to have a life of its own.

Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow releases on December 4 on the Meta Horizon store for Quest and you can wishlist the game right now to stay updated.
