Manage your Meta Quest’s location settings

You can choose to provide your Meta Quest device, and individual apps on the device, with access to location-related information by turning on Location Services. With your permission, your Meta Quest device and apps can use sources like crowdsourced Wi-Fi access points to determine your device’s location. You can always check your location settings to see if your preferences match your current selections.

How we use Location Services

If you turn on Location Services, Meta will use location-related information to improve the location accuracy of your device. When Location Services is turned off, we may still estimate your general location using things like your IP address. You can turn Location Services for your device on or off at any time in Settings.

How apps use Location Services

With your permission, Location Services may be used by apps to provide experiences that take into account your headset’s location. For example, an app may use location data to provide more accurate weather information, recommend nearby content, or to comply with legal or contractual obligations (e.g., streaming services available in your current area). If you choose to share location with an app, that app’s policies apply.

The first time an app tries to access your location, you’ll be asked if you want to turn on Location Services for your Meta Quest device, if you haven’t turned it on. If you turn Location Services on, you will then be asked if you want to share location information with the app. You can choose to share your approximate or precise location with an app.

Select Don’t allow if you prefer not to share location with a particular app.

Review and change app access to your device’s location anytime in the App permissions menu in Settings.

Turn location on or off

Meta Quest’s default setting for Location Services is off. You can turn Location Services on for your Meta Quest device, and then choose to turn location on for select apps individually. Location Services must be on for you to share location with an individual app.

To turn location on or off for your Meta Quest device, or for individual apps:

  1. Press Meta button or Oculus button on your controller to open the universal menu.
  2. Select the clock on the left side of the universal menu to open Quick settings.
  3. Select Settings in the top right, then select Apps.
  4. Select Privacy and safety
  5. Below Permissions, select Location to view a list of apps you own that may access your device’s location data.
  6. To enable or disable location services for your headset, select Device permissions, then select the toggle next to Location Services to turn location on or off.
  7. To enable or disable location services for individual apps, select App permissions, then select Location. Turn on the toggle at the top, then select individual apps to reveal options for location services.
