HEVC video codec used for exported Meta Quest media

When you record a video on Meta Quest, it may be saved using the HEVC video codec.

Most devices and operating systems include an in-built HEVC decode extension. Some, like Microsoft Windows, may ask you to pay $0.99 to download the HEVC decode extension when viewing media captured on a Meta Quest for the first time.

If you encounter this system message, there are a few free options available:

  • The Google Chrome browser includes an in-built HEVC decode extension.
    • Drag and drop the file into the address bar.
    • Or, right-click the file in your file explorer, select Open with and then Google Chrome.
  • VLC Media Player supports HEVC encoded media playback for free.

Most Android, iOS and MacOS devices should support playing HEVC media natively without any additional requirement.
