Troubleshoot black screen issues with your Meta Quest
If you’re seeing a black screen while using your headset, or if you're seeing a black screen and still hear audio, here are a few things you can try. Follow these steps in order.
1. Wait for updates to install
If your headset is stuck on the Meta logo or a computer chip icon, your device may be installing updates. Wait up to 15 minutes before proceeding with the steps below.
2. Reset your headset
Reset your headset by performing a hard reboot:
- Hold down the power and volume down buttons for at least 10 seconds, or until the boot screen loads on your headset.
- Use the volume buttons to scroll to Boot device and select it with the power button.
3. Update your headset software
If a hard reboot does not fix your issue, a software update may resolve the issue without requiring a factory reset. You can update your software using the mobile app or a desktop computer.
If your headset is connected to your Meta account:
- Open the Meta Horizon app on your phone.
- Tap Menu (☰) at the top of your Horizon Feed.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your Meta Quest headset from the list.
- Tap Headset Settings.
- Tap Software Update or Advanced Settings > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Update Now and wait for the process to complete.
Note: Your headset must be powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone for this to work.
4. Factory reset your headset (last resort)
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, a factory reset may be necessary. Please note that this will erase all data from your headset. You can learn how to do this in our factory reset guide.
5. Request a replacement or contact support
If your headset is still unresponsive after trying all of the steps above, the issue may be hardware-related. Visit our self-serve return page to see if your device is eligible for a replacement.
