Innovative by nature.
Responsible by design.

We believe in responsible innovation.

Our mission is to build the future of human connection and the technology that makes it possible. People are at the center of everything we build - from devices that will define the future of human connection to features that can impact everyday life. That's what makes Meta, Meta.

Our responsible innovation principles

To ensure that we're innovating with human connection and privacy in mind, our teams apply the following principles as they build new products.

Never surprise people

Be explicit and transparent about how our products work and the data they collect and share. We choose models that people will understand and proactively communicate both clearly and candidly, so people can make informed decisions about whether and how to use our products. We also articulate best practices for responsible use and behaviour when using our products.

Provide controls that matter

Augmented reality and immersive technologies blend the virtual and physical worlds, presenting opportunities to establish new digital and physical norms and set appropriate boundaries. We provide people with controls – where and when they matter – that give them agency over their experience and how they use our products. We won't offer controls for everything, but people should always have enough information to make an informed choice about whether to use our products.

You can control your preferences for captures, voice, and notifications on AI glasses and manage shared information with Meta. We also offer tools for parents and guardians to help manage app use and content for younger users on Quest headsets.

Consider everyone

In a world where mixed reality and immersive technology is ubiquitous, it is critical that we consider those who don't use our technology. We build with this in mind, and empower users to become stewards of respectful product use.

We know we can't get this right on our own, so we work with users and experts across academia, tech and human rights to ensure that our products reflect and benefit everyone who uses them and that they’re built with consideration for those who don’t.

Put people first

We believe that over the long term, business value stems from putting people first.

We ensure our products serve the needs of their communities by conducting user research, inviting people with a broad range of experiences and perspectives to co-design them with us, and partnering with external experts to build and share industry standards.

Frequently asked questions

Privacy

Meta AI app gives you control over what you choose to share and when. In the app, you can choose your preferences for captures, voice and notifications, and manage the information you share with Meta. Learn more about privacy on AI glasses.

Everything you capture on your glasses stays on your glasses until you choose to move them onto your phone using the Meta AI app. Once there, they're stored in your photo roll just like any other photo you've taken on your phone.Visit our Help Center to learn more about how to share and save photos and videos.

Taking photos and recording videos for your gallery or streaming will activate the notification and capture LEDs on your glasses. Learn more about bystander signalling for Meta's AI glasses.

We have features in place that will prohibit you from taking a photo or video if the light is covered, and it goes against our guidelines to place anything over it that deliberately covers the light when recording.

Examples of data that are processed on device include raw images from the sensors on Meta Quest devices such as images of your hands and body (if you choose to enable hand and body tracking), which are overwritten instantaneously.

Examples of data that are stored locally on the device include any weight, height or gender information that you choose to provide Move with.

You can visit the Privacy Center to learn more about your privacy settings and how and where to change them, view your information, download your information and delete your data.

You can also update and manage your privacy settings in the Meta Horizon app, in your headset and on your computer (for Rift and Rift S).

Responsible AI

No. Your chats with Meta AI are not shared to the Discover feed unless you choose to share them yourself. You’ll find more information on this in the help center.

Using your glasses camera for AI features refers to things like when people decide to ask Meta AI a prompt that uses their glasses camera to fulfill the request. For example, “Hey Meta, look and tell me what landmark this is” -or- “Hey Meta, what type of plant is this?”

Yes, you can delete your voice recordings with Meta AI. Models learn about patterns between pieces of information. If you delete a piece of information a model learned from, the model won’t change in that moment. However, your information itself will be deleted, and once it’s deleted, it won’t be used for future training.

Safety

We’ve developed guidelines to outline what is and isn’t appropriate use of the glasses, some of which are surfaced right in the app. It's important to respect the comfort and privacy of other people when using AI glasses. If you want to capture a photo or video, make sure that you ask for permission from those around you. A capture LED will light up to let people around you know when the camera is in use. You should avoid using your glasses in sensitive locations, places you would not want to be captured or where there is an expectation of privacy. Our guidelines are available in full on our dedicated privacy website for AI glasses.

To help keep you physically safe, Meta Quest allows you to set up a boundary that appears when you get too close to the edge of your playing area. You can also turn on Space Sense to see outlines of people, pets and other objects that cross over the boundaries of your play space. You can block someone at any time, or report anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable in Meta Horizon.

In addition to default youth protections, we provide parental controls for parents of children 10-12 years old and teens tools to approve or block app use, set time limits and filter content.

To keep families' activities and information private, Meta automatically turns on a private profile and sets Active Status to offline for all parent-managed and teen accounts by default.
