Following the Great Cataclysm, REYAB Corporation began taking power by denouncing the Old World governing entities' legal and economic systems, leaving many industries in flux due to the changing global landscape. For a short period, currencies were left largely unused as civilians turned to a barter system for daily transacting. On the brink of a trade crisis, the Global Economic Ledger (GEL) was introduced as the world's new decentralized reserve currency. GEL, a digital currency, was designed to be transparent, secure, and resistant to manipulation. Little is known about GEL's origin or how it came to be, but it was widely believed to be the start of a new era, a reset of the financial markets. Many believed it to be a step towards a fairer economic system, while some grew fearful of a monopolistic power looming behind this mysterious currency.
