How to use autocapture on AI glasses
Autocapture powered by Meta AI is available in the US and Canada in English for members of the Early Access Program. Autocapture in Early Access is compatible with Ray-Ban Meta 2, Oakley Meta Vanguard and Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, but not Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 or Meta Ray-Ban Display.
Autocapture with Garmin is available globally in all markets where Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta are sold, in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese.
Autocapture captures short video clips while you stay in the moment. After your session has ended, you get a highlights video compilation.
Autocapture types
You can use 2 types of autocapture:
- Autocapture powered by Meta AI uses contextual understanding to capture interesting moments. Use this for everyday social moments like spending time with friends or playing with pets.
- Autocapture with Garmin requires a compatible Garmin device. Your glasses capture clips based on metrics, such as distance, speed, elevation and heart rate during sports activities like running or cycling.
You can use autocapture powered by Meta AI and autocapture with Garmin together. When you set up autocapture with Garmin, turn on Meta AI captures. This enables Meta AI to capture more interesting moments during your session, in addition to captures based on your performance metrics.
Supported Garmin activities
- Running and walking.
- Cycling.
- Snow sports (skiing, snowboarding).

Use autocapture powered by Meta AI with Garmin
You can run autocapture powered by Meta AI at the same time as autocapture with Garmin. Meta AI captures interesting moments in addition to captures based on your performance metrics. If you run both at the same time, this may impact battery life.
- Connect your compatible Garmin device.
- In glasses settings, go to App connections, then Garmin, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Make sure the following permissions are turned on:
- Cloud media: Glasses settings then Privacy.
- Meta AI: Glasses settings.
- Go to autocapture in Garmin settings and turn on Auto-start and stop to start autocapture automatically.
- Turn on Meta AI captures. This enables Meta AI to capture more interesting moments during your session, in addition to captures based on your performance metrics.
Start an autocapture session
Say "Hey Meta, start autocapture."
If you have a Garmin device connected, turn on Auto-start and stop to start autocapture automatically.
Check if autocapture is on: At any time, say "Hey Meta, is autocapture on?" You can also check the Glasses tab in the Meta AI mobile app.
Pause or stop autocapture
To pause an autocapture session, say "Hey Meta, pause autocapture."
To stop an autocapture session:
- Say "Hey Meta, stop autocapture."
- Take off your AI glasses and close the hinges.
- Save your Garmin activity if you turned on the automatic start feature.
Session length and battery life
Most people get the best experience from autocapture sessions of 15 to 30 minutes. Your AI glasses alert you when the battery gets low. For extended activities, start with a full charge.
If you set up autocapture with Garmin and turn off Meta AI captures, autocapture triggers based on your performance metrics only. This supports longer sessions of up to 4 hours.
How autocapture determines what to capture
Autocapture powered by Meta AI:
Once you start an autocapture session, Meta AI captures a continuous series of low-resolution images (similar to Live AI). These quick images provide enough detail to understand the context of a moment, like recognizing a birthday cake or a soccer goal.
Your glasses record a video clip when Meta AI recognizes a moment worth capturing.
Autocapture with Garmin:
Your glasses capture clips based on workout metrics from your connected Garmin device, such as distance, speed, elevation, and heart rate.
Audio and visual indicators
The capture LED lets others know when your glasses are recording. When autocapture records a video:
- The capture LED turns on.
- You hear a capture sound. This is the same sound as manual video capture.
- At the start of a session, you hear "Starting autocapture."
These cues show you and people around you that autocapture is recording.
If the capture LED is covered, you'll be notified to clear it before your glasses can take a photo or video.

What is captured
Autocapture records short video clips and compiles them into a highlights video. It doesn't automatically take photos. You can manually take your own photos at any time during an autocapture session. These are included alongside your autocaptured clips.
Use autocapture without internet
If your mobile device loses internet or mobile connectivity, autocapture continues.
You need a Bluetooth connection to your mobile device to start autocapture.
How autocapture works and what else you can do
Autocapture lets you stay in the moment by automatically recording short video highlights during your activities. While autocapture is running, you can still enjoy many of your glasses' features:
- Take manual photos and videos with the Capture button or voice commands. These are included in your highlights video.
- Listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks.
- Ask Meta AI questions for information or assistance.
- Make or receive phone calls (autocapture pauses during calls and resumes after).
Benefits of autocapture:
- Hands-free recording means you don't need to stop and press a button to capture key moments.
- You can stay present during your activity. After your session, Meta AI compiles your clips into a highlights video. You also get access to all individual clips and any manual captures you made.
Some features require ending autocapture, such as Live Translation and Live AI.
