You can start a chat with the Meta AI assistant on the Meta AI app. Meta AI can generate responses to any questions, give you details on a photo or generate images or animations for you, help edit your writing and more based on your prompt.

When you chat with Meta AI, you can change how it responds by selecting a mode. Changing Meta AI’s mode will better match its responses to your questions.

To start a chat with Meta AI:

  1. Open the Meta AI app.
  2. At the bottom, tap Ask Meta AI… and type in your prompt.
  3. Choose Meta AI’s mode by tapping the current mode in the bottom right, then tapping the mode you’d like to use. Some modes include:
    • Instant: Generates quicker responses, best used for everyday questions.
    • Thinking: Generates in-depth responses for more complex questions or reasoning.
    • Shopping: A dedicated shopping concierge for you based on your interests and prompt.
  4. Tap . Meta AI will generate a response for you.

You can have a voice chat with Meta AI by tapping before sending a prompt. You can say something like “Hang up.” or “I’m done.” to end the chat. You’ll need to allow the Meta AI app access to your microphone to speak with Meta AI.

If you're having a voice conversation with Meta AI, you can continue talking to Meta AI in the background while you use other apps on your device. When the Meta AI app is in the background, your device will show that the microphone is in use. Tap X or End on the voice conversation to end it. Depending on your device's manufacturer your steps and what you see may differ.

While voice chatting with Meta AI, you can ask questions about what you’re seeing around you by connecting your camera. Tap to begin or end sharing your camera.

You can also ask Meta AI questions about a photo by tapping , then tapping Camera to take a picture or Photo library to upload a photo, then typing in or speaking your prompt. (Example: “What breed of cat is this?” or “Where can I find this hat?”)
